Area volleyball roundup: Nodaway Valley falls just short at ACGC, SWV edges EU

Southwest Valley 2, East Union 1

STANTON – Southwest Valley (4-8) went toe-to-toe with East Union (4-7) Monday night, pulling out a 3-2 win over the Eagles.

The Timberwolves won the first set 25-10, lost the second set to EU 25-21, and then won the decisive third set 15-11.

SWV’s Marah Larsen led in kills with eight. She also led in digs with four, and had a solo block with Sam Larsen.

“We came out and played well in the first set against EU, and really didn’t have too many issues or unforced errors,” said SWV head coach Lindsay Wetzel. “(We) came out in Set 2 and missed two serves right away and shanked two passes, ... we just didn’t play well in Set 2. ... Glad we were able to put it together in Set 3 for the win.”

EU was led in kills by Mikala Sanson’s six. Elizabeth Hardy assisted 10 points and Mikenna Cass had a team-high seven digs.

Stanton 2, Southwest Valley 0

STANTON – Southwest Valley lost to Stanton in a 2-0 shutout Monday night.

The Timberwolves played close with Stanton, but were unable to overcome the 21-25 and 14-25 scores in each set.

“We played with them point-for-point in the first set,” said Wetzel. “We seemed energized. We were moving out feet and eliminating unforced errors on our side of the net. We have to continue to improve on our defensive game and be able to stay down, be at base, and not transition into defense early. Norah Lund did a nice job in both sets leaving her feet and going after the ball.”

The the Timberwolves had nine kills against Stanton, with Kyli Aldrich and Marah Larsen tallying three each.

Lund led in digs with seven.

Stanton 2, East Union 0

STANTON – East Union lost 2-0 to Stanton Monday night, losing back-to-back sets 11-25 and 10-25.

With the win for Stanton, the Viqueens improved to 11-1, and are 5-0 against Pride of Iowa teams this season. The Eagles lost their third straight after going on a three-game win streak.

The Eagles had four kills each from Sanson and Grace Nixon, tying for the team-high.

Hardy and Cass led in assists and digs, tallying eight and three, respectively.

ACGC 2, Nodaway Valley 0

ADAIR – Nodaway Valley (16-4) came up just shy of another tournament win, falling to ACGC (11-1) 2-0 at the Chargers’ tournament Saturday.

ACGC pulled out close wins over the Wolverines, taking both sets 25-19.

Maddax DeVault and Corinne Bond each had eight kills. Shike had 16 assists.

Nodaway Valley 2, Colfax-Mingo 0

ADAIR – Nodaway Valley knocked off Colfax-Mingo (5-7) 2-0 at the ACGC tournament Saturday.

The Wolverines put on a strong performance, winning 25-14 and 25-16.

Emma Perkey had a block for the Wolverines. Lindsey Davis was 3-for-4 from serve.

Nodaway Valley 2, Exira-EHK 0

ADAIR – Nodaway Valley beat Exira-EHK (3-10) in dominating fashion, winning both sets at the ACGC tournament Saturday.

Nodaway Valley won both sets 21-9 to take a quick win.

Natalie Yonker was 7-for-8 on serve attempts and had five digs. DeVault had seven kills.

Nodaway Valley 2, West Central Valley 0

ADAIR – Nodaway Valley started the ACGC tournament Saturday with a 2-0 win over West Central Valley (6-10).

The Wolverines took 21-8 and 21-18 wins over the Wildcats.

Shike had 13 assists and three kills. Yonker had 11 digs for a team-high.

Mount Ayr 2, Wayne 1

MOUNT AYR – Mount Ayr (3-4) rallied for a win over Wayne (2-7) in the final set of the Raiderettes home tournament Saturday.

The Raiderettes won the first set 21-12 before Wayne came back for a 24-22 win in the second set. A rally to a 20-18 win in the third set gave Mount Ayr the win.

Hope Whittington had 10 assists and went 8-for-9 from serve. Tegan Streit had three blocks.

Lamoni 2, Mount Ayr 1

MOUNT AYR – Mount Ayr fell to Lamoni 2-1 at the Raiderettes’ home tournament Saturday.

Mount Ayr took the first set 21-17. Lamoni responded with a 21-13 win in the second set and grabbed a 15-8 win in the short, final set.

Addy Reynolds had five kills. Alexa Anderson, Payten Lambert and Streit each had one block. Rachel Sobotka had two blocks.

Interstate 35 2, Mount Ayr 1

MOUNT AYR – Interstate 35 (2-11) knocked off Mount Ayr 2-1 at its tournament Saturday.

The Raiderettes won the first set in dominating fashion, 21-9. I-35 came back for a 23-21 second-set win and took the third set 15-9.

Maddie Stewart had eight digs to lead the team.

Lenox 2, East Union 0

AFTON – Lenox (6-5) stayed hot, beating East Union (4-5) 2-0 at the Eagles’ triangular Thursday.

The Tigers rolled, winning 25-12 and 25-16 in the two sets.

TJ Stoaks had 10 digs and six kills. Cassidy Nelson also had 10 digs while recording two aces.

East Union’s Elizabeth Hardy had seven assists. Mikala Sanson was 7-for-8 on serves, tallying two aces.

East Union 2, Earlham 1

AFTON – East Union took down Earlham (4-10) at its home triangular Thursday.

The Eagles edged out a 25-20 win in the first set before Earlham stormed back 25-10 in the second set. The final set saw the Eagles take a 15-8 win.

Grace Nixon had four blocks on the day. Mikenna Cass had seven digs and seven successful serves.

Lenox 2, Earlham 0

AFTON – Lenox took a 2-0 win over Earlham at East Union’s triangular Thursday.

The Tigers dominated, taking 25-10 and 25-17 wins over the Cardinals.

Stoaks had three blocks and nine kills. Nelson had 16 digs on the day.

Ankeny Christian 3, Orient-Macksburg 1

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg (0-6) fell to Ankeny Christian (8-7) in four sets after an early advantage.

The Bulldogs took a lead after the first set, winning 25-21. Ankeny Christian rallied back with 25-19, 25-21 and 25-21 wins in consecutive sets.

Stats were unavailable at time of press.

Murray 3, Diagonal 0

MURRAY – Murray (5-2) knocked off Diagonal (0-4) 3-0 at home Thursday.

The Lady Mustangs dominated in each set, winning 25-10, 25-8 and 25-7.

Murray’s Jayda Chew had 16 assists on the day. Teryn Shields had nine kills while Twila Barber was 22-for-22 on serve attempts.

Diagonal’s Anna Newton had two aces on five successful serves. Keara Ott and Lauren Burton had six digs each.

Murray 3, Melcher-Dallas 1

MELCHER – Murray knocked off Melcher-Dallas (6-1), handing the Saints their first loss of the season Tuesday.

Murray won the first set 25-17 before Melcher-Dallas responded with a 25-17 set win of its own. The Lady Mustangs rallied back for 25-14 and 25-19 wins.

Chew had 17 assists. Chloe Church and Barber had six kills each. Abbe Baumfalk had 10 digs.

East Union 3, Mount Ayr 0

MOUNT AYR – East Union took a 3-0 win over Mount Ayr Tuesday.

The Eagles edged out a 25-23 win in the first set before a strong 25-12 performance in the second set. The Raiderettes made things close in the third set before East Union edged out another close win, 26-24.

East Union’s Hardy had five kills and 12 assists. Nixon had nine kills and six blocks. Sanson had four aces on 17-for-17 serving.

Mount Ayr stats were unavailable at time of press.

Paton-Churdan 3, Orient-Macksburg 1

ORIENT – Orient-Macksburg fell to Paton-Churdan 3-1 Monday night.

The Rockets took the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-17. O-M bounced back in the third set, winning 25-18. The Bulldogs eventually fell in the fourth set, losing 25-20.

Caitlyn Gist had 10 kills for the Bulldogs. Kinsey Eslinger had 11 assists and was 18-for-18 from serve. Emily Campbell had two blocks.

Essex 3, Diagonal 0

ESSEX – Diagonal struggled against Essex Monday, Sept. 14, falling 3-0.

The Maroonettes dropped all three sets 25-9, 25-13 and 25-20.

Alaina Whittington had five assists and one kill. Taylor Lumbard had five kills and one assist. Kerrigan Mobley and Lauren Burton had four digs each.
