VFW Post No. 1797

VFW Post No. 1797 met Aug. 11 at Elks Club in Creston, with 11 members and guests present for dinner.

Commander O’Daniels called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. with 13 members present. The post draped the charter for veteran Gordon Paulus.

Service officers reported 53 hours community service, 14 hours hospital service and two hours for honor guard for a total of 69 hours. 560 miles were traveled for veterans.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

In old business, an update was given on the next Union County Honor Flight, and it was decided the next flight would be in May 2021.

Information was shared on the veterans wall to be placed at the VFW ballfield. National Korean War Armistice was July 27.

In new business, District 4 meeting is planned for Aug. 29 in Oskaloosa. The state convention awards and “pow wow” is scheduled for Oct. 22 through 25 at the Embassy Suites in Des Moines.

The mid-winter conference is scheduled for Jan. 15 and 16 at Holiday Inn Airport in Des Moines.

In state news, a plan to have a VFW event at Three Mile Lake near Afton is planned for July 2021 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Iowa VFW. Challenge coins are on sale for $10, contact Gary or Denny.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 8 at Elk club. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and meeting follows at 7 p.m. All war veterans are encouraged to attend.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

The Ladies’ Lakeshore Auxiliary met for “cards and chatter” Sept. 2. The canasta winners were Judy Nissen, first; Linda Clark, second; Janice Munstermann, third. The winner of the door prize was Sandy Krauth. Their next meeting will be Sept. 9 and the hostess will be Joy Seeley.
