Iowa State Fair hosts virtual state fair (Aug. 13-23)
The planners of the Iowa State Fair have announced events will take place virtually. For the 11 days that would have been the Iowa State Fair, Aug. 13 to 23, fair videos, competitions, facts, memories, classes, history, trivia and games will be found on their website and Facebook page. Eagles Club painting party (Aug. 18)
Creston’s Eagles Club is hosting a painting party on the 18th, pre-registration is required and the cost will be $20. Contact the Club for more information and get signed up.

The concert series held on the east lawn of the Elks Lodge will feature a different musical artist each Friday from 5:08 to 7:08 p.m. until Sept. 4. This week’s musical guest will be Brian Congdon. Event sponsored by First National Bank, with co-sponsor partner Tyler Insurance. Proceeds go to Uptown Hanging Flower Baskets.

Mayor Gabe Carroll proclaims ‘Lions Candy Day’ (Aug. 26)
Mayor Gabe Carroll proclaimed Aug. 26 “Lions Candy Day.” Creston Lions Club will be selling candy Wednesday morning, in a yearly sale to raise funds to continue its service to the community. The Creston Lions Club works to conserve sight and hearing by providing and sponsoring glaucoma, diabetes and hearing testing to those in need, as well as providing equipment. They will be distributing candy at the following locations, from 8 to 10 a.m.: Townline and Cherry, Adams and Jarvis, South Elm and Clark streets.

Southern Prairie Family Fitness Center hosts ‘Yoga Under the Stars’ (Sept. 1)
Southern Prairie Family Fitness Center hosts “Yoga under the stars,” 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1201 W. Townline St. in Creston (meet at the south side of the building). This event is free and the instructor will be Mia. It doesn’t matter if you have been doing yoga for years or this is your first time, just enjoy the moment. Social distance guidelines will be followed. Bring your own mat or blanket, even a friend or two.
Community Coffee and Conversations with Deron Stender (Sept. 3)
Creston Superintendent Deron Stender has been looking to get out in the community, and one way he has done this is to host monthly coffees, taking place the first Thursday of the month at different locations around the community. Next one will be Thursday, Sept. 3, time and place to be determined. This is an informal opportunity to visit, ask questions, and share concerns. Southern Prairie Family Fitness Center hosts ‘family movie night’ (Sept. 18)
Event starts at 7:30 p.m., movie starts at 8:15 p.m. and is being held outside in the yard at Southern Prairie Family Fitness Center, 1201 W. Townline St., Creston. Social distancing guidelines will be followed, noting that grass section seating is limited. Call ahead to reserve a family section, starting Sept. 1, at 641-782-9622. Suicide Awareness Skate Event (Sept. 19)
Skate for Awareness is hosting an event 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at the skate park in McKinley Park, to help raise money for suicide awareness and prevention. Event includes yard games, volley ball, vendors, food, silent auction and bake sale. The event will conclude with candlelight vigil.
2020 Steak Fry (Sept. 13)

Tingley’s ‘crank-off’ ice cream contest (Sept. 20)
A “crank-off” ice cream contest will be at 4 p.m., Sept. 20 at Tingley Memorial Park. All ice cream is to be made in a crank or electric ice cream freezer. Entries will be judged on originality, flavor, texture and appearance. Contestant to be prepared to dip their ice cream upon the request of the judges at 4 p.m. No commercial mixes may be used. Entries must be made from scratch. Bring the already-made ice cream and a dipper along to the park. Bowls and spoons will be provided. The two classes are: A. Vanilla, B. Anything Goes. After all the winners are announced, free ice cream will be served to the public. In case of rain, event will be held in the McFarland garage at the east edge of Main Street. Gibson Memorial Library kicks off the first of its new ‘adult book clubs, which will be held virtually vial Zoom. The selected book for September is “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens.
