Judy Chastain, 74, of Afton died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020, at Unity Point Taylor House in Des Moines. A combined celebration of life service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. Pastor Mary O’Riley will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery east of Afton. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Social distancing will be observed. Family requests masks be worn and they will refrain from hugs and handshakes to keep everyone healthy. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family. Judy Dalton Chastain, daughter of Albert J. Dalton and Mary Jean (Landers) Dalton, was born Dec. 14, 1945, in Creston. She graduated from Creston High School in 1963.

On Oct. 9, 1965, Judy married Joe Chastain in Creston. They first lived in Des Moines where Judy worked at American Republic Insurance.

Moving to Omaha in 1966, she was a homemaker until her children were in school, then she worked for Grandmother’s Restaurant and Corporate Recruiters in Omaha. The family moved to Afton in 1990, where she worked for the Afton Star Enterprise, she then managed the Fairview Apartments for over 15 years.

Judy had been active with the Afton Community Club, “The Sorority” and was the chairperson of the group that established the New Afton Community Building. Judy loved attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include her two sons: Jeff (Shannon) Chastain of Hebron, Kentucky, Jim (Amy) Chastain of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; daughter Jill (Sam) McKnight of Afton; brother Harold Dalton (significant other April Austin) of Afton; 10 grandchildren: Joe, Katie and Kara Ramirez, Krista and Jeffrey Chastain, Dalton and Devin Chastain, Beth, Noelle and Colton McKnight; one great-grandson Wesson James Labor.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Mark James Chastain and brother James Ira Dalton.
