The storied Nodaway Valley cross country program with 32 Pride of Iowa championships and 29 state-qualifying teams is holding its cross country camp July 20-24.
“The camp will allow the staff to evaluate where each runner is at midway through the summer,” the brochure states. “It will allow the team to continue to build as a team and yet be responsible for one’s training by covering various topics and training techniques throughout the week. The athlete will be better prepared for the season.”
Topics covered throughout the week include race tactics, nutrition, hydration, injury prevention, strength and flexibility and more. Training techniques covered include continuous runs, fartlek, interval training, repetition running, hill training, tempo runs, pace training and speed work.
Coach Darrell Burmeiser encourages runners to have “some base mileage completed before the start of camp” as there will be different levels of workouts on age and experience.
Two sessions will be offered each day – covering the same topics and workouts – from 8-10 a.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. Registration fees cost $15 and are paid on the first day of camp. The $15 fee includes a t-shirt and Gatorade each day.
“Registration forms only sent in mail, camp fees can be paid the first day of camp, in case we have to cancel camp I don’t want the camp fees prior to the start of the camp,” Burmeister said.
