Creston

John Latham, 85, of Creston died Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Homestead Assisted Living in Creston. A celebration of life memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2020, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Pastor Mary O'Riley will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery of Afton. Visitation will be with family receiving friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials to be determined. John Gale Latham, son of John W. Latham and Cleone Ruth (Long) Latham, was born Oct. 19, 1934, near Arispe. He graduated from Arispe High School in 1953.

On June 28, 1953, John married Deloris “Dorie” L. Miller in Afton. They were married for 60 years. They first lived in Arispe and then south of Afton. They settled in Creston in 1957. Together they had three sons Gerry, Larry and Terry. John worked for Archie Donald in Afton, then the Farmers Co-op of Creston, then at the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring as a maintenance supervisor after 30 years. They were life long Union County residents.

John and his wife Dorie enjoyed dancing, bowling, camping, following their kids’, grandkids’ and great-grandkids’ sporting events and activities. Every August they could always be found at the Iowa State Fair. John was a past president of the Creston Eagles Lodge No. 1398.

Survivors include his two sons: Larry (Nancy) Latham of Creston and Terry (Diane) Latham of Laurens; daughter-in-law Frances Latham of Crossville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren: Brenda Latham, Tonya Latham, Cory (wife Tammi) Latham, Staci (Tim) Rourke, Brett (Laura) Latham, Gerry (Gina) Latham Jr., Dustin (Jennifer) Latham, Eddie Mackey, Linda Hensley; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister Joyce (Richard) Ross of Creston; and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorie in 2013, a son Gerry in 2018, sister Norma (Francis) Sweet, brother Earl (Joyce) Latham, and 2 brothers-in-law Donald (Joann) Miller and Dwight (Barb) Miller.
