Green Valley’s campground reopened Friday and has been packed since Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds allowed citizens to return to state parks.
Memorial Day weekend was the first big weekend back for campers and they turned out in droves, putting things “back to normal.”
“The only thing that’s different is that the playgrounds aren’t opened up and shelters aren’t opened up yet,” said Jason Hyde, Green Valley park ranger. “But, all three cabins were rented and campers were back outside enjoying campfires at the campsites.”
Hyde said there are 101 campsites and all 83 electric sites were full for Memorial Day weekend and the weekend before. He expects to be full every weekend until mid-October.
With the increased traffic, Hyde said all the facilities are receiving cleaning and care, but social-distancing guidelines are still in play and should be followed.
Gathering in more than 10 is still prohibited at the state park, and Hyde said campers did a good job of avoiding those large numbers.
“People are abiding by it at the campground,” said Hyde. “They enjoy coming out in the peace and quiet at a peaceful campground and enjoying their time.”
The sense and possibility of COVID-19 had an effect on campers as they “didn’t wander” around the campsite and remained with their families. But, with things starting to return back to normal, Hyde said he wants to remind campers to continue to keep social-distancing practices in mind as campsites fill.
“I just want people to come out, enjoy themselves, but make sure they’re following the governor’s guidelines,” Hyde said. “... Come out, enjoy the outdoors. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.”
