CCHS 2020 Seniors awards ceremony

Creston High School’s 2020 Seniors Awards ceremony held May 14.

Bill Messerole welcomed and congratulated the Class of 2020. Gov. Kim Reynolds congratulated the Class of 2020 via video and a slide presentation was given featuring the graduating class.

Angela Bolinger presented the following awards:

• Mackenzie Bodell — Omaha World Herald All Academic Team honorable mention, Des Moines Register Academic All-State Team, Iowa State University Academic Award.

• Eli Loudon — Omaha World Herald All Academic Team honorable mention, Better Business Bureau Foundation Student of Integrity nominee, Iowa State Forever scholar, 2020 Governor’s scholar.

Laura Granger presented Abbigail Hood with the Creston Education Association scholarship. Bill Messerole presented Calista Mason with the 2020 Hixson scholarship. Scott Vicker presented SWCC scholarships.

The following students received these scholarships:

• Devin Baker — $500 from Creston Kiwanis, $250 from Veterans of Foreign Wars.

• Payton Burg — $300 Union County Federated Women’s Club, $200 June Bower endowment.

• Paige Busch — $500 Eric Crittenden Memorial, $250 Paul Somers Endowment, $300 Creston Rotary Club.

• Brayton Chesnut — $1200, Iowa State Savings Bank, Karl and Jan Knock endowment.

• Hunter Fry — $500 Creston Kiwanis, $200 Bluegrass Board of Realtors, $300 Jesse C. Morse scholarship.

• Hayden Green — $250 TRIO - ETS scholarship.

• Brandon Hammons — $250 TRIO - ETS scholarship.

• Emma Hanson — $250 TRIO - ETS scholarship.

• Abbigail Hood — $1,000 Peak family endowment, $500 Eric Crittenden Memorial scholarship, $250 TRIO - ETS, $300 Creston Rotary Club scholarship.

• MaKenna Hudson — $1,600 Iowa State Savings Bank - Emerson endowment, $250 TRIO-ETS, $300 Creston Rotary.

• Isaac Jacobson — $500 Creston Lion’s Club, $100 Class of 1933 Endowment, $100 Clare Lininger Memorial Endowment, $250 TRIO-ETS.

• Paul Johnston — $500 Eric Crittenden Memorial, $250 Paul Somers Endowment, $250 TRIO-ETS, $300 Creston Rotary Club.

• Luke Latham — $500 Creston Lion’s Club, $250 VFW scholarship, $500 Eric Crittenden Memorial scholarship, $300 Creston Rotary Club.

• Jared Moreland — $200 Kirk and Ann Levine Endowment, $250 Lynn Sickels Memorial scholarship, $500 Creston American Legion.

• Sydney Pantini — $250 Eric Crittenden Memorial scholarship, $250 TRIO-ETS, $300 Creston Rotary Club.

• Emma Hanson — Trustee Scholar award.

• Devin Baker — Collegiate Scholar award.

• Payton Burg — Collegiate Scholar award.

Doug North presented the following SWCC athletic scholarships to the following students:

• Emma Hanson — volleyball scholarship

• Makenna Hudson — volleyball scholarship

• Payton Burg — dance scholarship.

• Paige Busch — dance scholarship.

• Jared Moreland — Cross country, track and field scholarships.

Tammy Riley presented honorable mentions, scholarships and awards to the following students:

• Spencer Lane — Omaha World Herald All Academic Team honorable mention, CHS’s Nancy McKay Harsh chapter DAR Good Citizen’s program, nominee, George Beadle scholarship, Husker Heritage scholarship, Honors program scholarship.

• Rylan Luther — Presidential Scholarship from Dordt University.

• Hannah Walsh — Distinguish, Trustee, Journey and Couchman scholarships.

Sue Basler presented the Murphy Fry Memorial Scholarship to Eli Loudon.

Melissa Sickels presented the following students with “Dollars for Scholars” scholarships:

Bill Messerole presented Jennie McDowell and Harlan Layton Scholarships to the following students: Armando Banda, Isaac Jacobson and Calista Mason. Ms. Ellen Gerharz presented the Chamber’s Union County Youth of the Year award to Spencer Lane. Melissa Driskell awarded the Creston Booster Club schoarships to Abbigail Hood and Gavin Gilliam.

• Isaac Jacobson — College Book Scholarship from Professional Educators of Iowa.

• Payton Burg — Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation.

• Aiden Filer — Ringgold County Farm Bureau.

Rusty Zimmerman presented the Union County Farm Bureau scholarships to the following students:

• Danika Schultes, Hannah Walsh and Brayton Chesnut.

Tim Kenyon presented the American Bar Citizenship Award to Abbigail Hood. Jeff Bevins presented the Red Cross Schoalrships to Heylee Shields, Eli Hartman and Ellie Starlin. Scott Driskell presented the Eagles Scholarship to Spencer Lane, Paige Busch and Luke Latham.

Shannon Smith presented the IBEA Outstanding Business Student Recognition Awards to Spencer Lane, Calista Mason, Jared Moreland and Camden Peterson. Kelsey Bailey presented the Mark Pearson Memorial Full Tuition Scholarship to Gavin Gilliam. The National Kevin Eblen Memorial went to Danika Schultes.

Tammy Riley presented the following grants awards and scholarships to the following students:

• Aubrianna Woody — IMAGES minority grant, SBS scholarship, UNI RISE award, UNI-T.E.D. Scholarship, Panther Impact Award, full tuition guarantee program at the University of Northern Iowa.

• Jacob Rutz — Midland Performing Arts Scholarship.

• Danika Schultes — UNL Scarlett Scholar.

Mike Eblen presented Danika Schultes with the Union County Soil and Water Conservation District Scholarship.

The Crest Area Theatre presented the following students with the Crest Area Theatre Scholarships: Mackenzie Bodell, Gabriel Frakes and Sasha Smith.

Pastor Jodi Rushing presented the First United Methodist Church Rick Stagg Achievement Scholarship to Jacob Rushing. Bill Messerole presented the Kiwanis Scholarships to Devin Baker and Hunter Fry.

Marika Chubick presented the Horatio Alger Scholarship to Ashton Wills and Brad Baker presented the Creston Basketball Association Scholarship to Sydney Hartsock and Spencer Lane.

• Gabriel Frakes — IHSMTA Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role.

• Sasha Smith — IHSMTA Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role and Iowa Choral Director’s Association Award.

Mike Peters presented band awards to the following students:

Kim Riley presented the LaVerne Anderson Memorial Scholarship to Eli Loudon. Scott Driskell presented the Greater Regional Medical Center Scholarship to Ashton Wills.

Brian Morrison presented the Dordt Football Scholarship to Rylan Luther. Mike McCabe presented the DMACC Softball Scholarship to Sara Keeler.

Tammy Riley presented the following scholarships and awards to these students:

The 4x4 Award went to Brayton Chesnut.

The nominee for the E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship was Sydney Pantini, and the nominee for the 2020 Robert Smiley Scholarship was Sara Keeler.

The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association Scholarship was Spencer Lane.

Bill Messerole presented the Hawkeye 10 Awards, Academic Letter winners and ceremony wrap up: The Hawkeye 10 All Academic Winner was Spencer Lane. Honorable Mentions: Anne Guthrie and Levi Hitz. Character Winner was Emma Hanson.
