Richard Clayton, 84, of Creston passed away Thursday, April 9, 2020, at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. No services will be held. Online condolences may be given at the tribute wall at www.powersfh.com.
Richard Wayne Clayton was born July 4, 1935, in Afton to Mabel M. (Stephens) Clayton and William Albert Clayton. He attended country school at Lincoln Township, Union County, and graduated from Creston High School in 1954. Following graduation, Richard entered the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of Airman 1st Class as an aircraft electrician. He was honorably discharged in 1958. While in France during his tour of service, Richard met Lucie Yabbis.
Richard was united in marriage to Lucie in Creston March 14, 1959. Their only child was Alan J. Clayton. Richard worked for five years at International Harvester in Creston, and then for Iowa Electric — now Alliant Energy — for thirty-one years. He retired in 1996. Richard served on the Graceland Cemetery Board for 10 years and was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his brother William E. (Bill) Clayton of Granbury, Texas; many nieces and nephews; and Richard’s friend and caregiver, Diana Arevelo of Creston.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lucie; son Alan; three sisters: Shirley Hill, Beverly Metzger, Barbara Musmaker; and brother James W. Clayton.
