Paul Herr

Paul Herr, 64, of Greenfield passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Celebration of life services will be 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the services. Pastor Steven Broers will officiate the service. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Paul Walter Herr was born June 17, 1955, In Greenfield to parents Walter Paul and Marian Elizabeth (Umbaugh) Herr. He grew up on a farm south of Fontanelle where he later raised his family. He was baptized July 31, 1955, by Pastor Lutz and confirmed May 4, 1969, by Pastor Burrack at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Paul attended Bridgewater-Fontanelle and graduated with the Class of 1973. He attended Iowa State University in the winter quarter.

Paul thoroughly loved farming with his father. He was not happy until he was covered with dirt from his head to his toes.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Mary Edson August 23, 1986, and blessed with three daughters: Alyse Naomi, Rachel Mary, and Susan Elizabeth. Paul was always ready to lend a helping hand and served on the church council, Adair County Cattlemen, Adair County Fair Board and the Farmers Lumber Board. He supported his children in their church, school, sports, and 4-H activities.

Paul is survived by his father Walter Herr of rural Greenfield; wife Virginia Herr of Greenfield; three daughters: Alyse Dreher (Dan) of Adair, Rachel Hall (Kelly) of Fontanelle and Susan McDowell (Dillon) of Stuart; four grandchildren; three sisters: Barbara McKibban (Steve) of Greenfield, Paula Bachhuber (Jack) of Urbandale and Marcia Plett (John) of Gladbrook; and other relatives and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother Marian Elizabeth (Umbaugh) Herr and two nieces: Kelly Kay Bachhuber and Sara Elizabeth McKibban.
