WINTERSET – Creston/Orient-Macksburg began the season Monday night with wins over Interstate 35 and Nodaway Valley.

C/O-M head coach Cody Downing said it was a good start after I-35 beat the Panthers last season.

“It was a good team to test yourself against early,” Downing said.

The Predicament’s No. 5 195 pound wrestler Sam Chapman earned his ranking with a fall at 5:15 over I-35’s Brock Thompson.

Beau Thompson gave the Panthers a step in the right direction with a fall at 5:43 at 126 pounds. Garon Wurster followed suit with a fall at 3:39. Wurster picked up a pin in his match with I-35’s Trey Palmer.

A big bright spot for C/O-M was Keaton Street. He broke his leg last season and is returning this year. Street took a win over Logan Wearmouth.

Downing said one thing that was evident with his team was the conditioning. The group was in great shape to start the season and won all of the toss up matches.

“Wins like this prove what we’re doing in the room,” Downing said.

C/O-M beat I-35 8-7 with Briley Hayes and Jackson Kinsella winning on forfeits.

The Panthers also faced a shorthanded NV lineup. Austin Seaton, Hayden Green, Sam Chapman, Andy Weis and Chris Wilson all won due to forfeit.

Downing said the guys that were able to compete, not winning on forfeit, did well in their matches.

Thompson and Wurster again won their matches with falls at 2:55 and 1:17. Kaden Bolton earned his team points with a fall at 2:55, and Street finished with a 15-0 tech fall.

To round out the remaining wrestlers, The Predicament’s No. 2 182 wrestler in class 2A and one of the team leaders, Jackson Kinsella ended the day with a fall at 58 seconds to give his team a 65-18 win.

“Last year we walked away 1-1,” Downing said. “I’m happy we’re walking away 20 this year. We’re making progress as a team and program.”

Nodaway Valley battles

Nodaway Valley’s limited team battled against strong Creston/O-M and Winterset teams.

At 113, Elliot Cooney continued to be a strong point of NV’s lineup as he picked up a win over Creston/O-M’s Chase Lovely in 47 seconds.

Ben Breheny also got a fall, this time in 5:41 over Trey Chesnut at 120. The other point scorer for the Wolverines was Tyler Breheny, picking up a 3-2 decision win at 152 over Briley Hayes.

Against Winterset, the Wolverines continued to struggle against deeper lineups in a 75-4 point loss.

Breheny was the lone point scorer against Winterset, beating Carson Rhoads in a 12-4 major decision.
