Spencer Lane recognized as Youth Honoree of the Year

CCHS Senior to receive award from Creston Chamber of Commerce

Creston Community High School senior Spencer Lane has been named Youth Honoree of the Year.

Youth Honoree of the Year is bestowed to one Creston area senior by the Creston Chamber of Commerce. This designation is awarded to an individual who has set themselves apart as a role model — both within the school and the community as a whole.

“It surprised me to get nominated for it,” said Lane. “It’s a nice honor to get recognized for the things I do for the community.”

Lane is an active student, having competed in cross country, basketball and soccer throughout all four years of his high school career. Additionally, Lane has been part of the student government for three years — currently serving as student body treasurer—as well as making quite an impact within the Creston Future Business Leaders of America.

“It is very rare to find someone his age who is this analytical but also considerate of others’ thoughts and feelings,” said Creston FBLA adviser Shannon Smith. “His willingness to serve as a leader in our school and the level headedness he brings to everything he does. He is a tremendous asset to Crestonn, and he will e sorely missed when he graduates.”

FBLA is an area where Lane truly shines. He is the youngest chapter president Creston FBLA has ever had, and he is shaping up to earn the most competitive awards of any chapter member by the end of this year.

“When you see a lot of upperclassmen start narrowing down their activities, Spencer has decided to keep challenging himself,” said Smith. “He enjoys working with others and I believe he makes teams more positive.”

Lane was co-committee chair on an Honor Flight service activity— a trip taken by veterans to visit the nation’s capitol. With Lane’s help, the project managed to raise over $12,000 for Union County veterans.

Aside from his school participation, Lane is a dedicated member of Appalachia Service Project. ASP is an inter church organization that raises money for projects to work on every summer and assists some of the most impoverished communities in the United States.

“We spend a week during the summer rebuilding homes and helping people,” said Lane.

Lane has attended the ASP mission trip for the past three years in Kentucky. He believes that spending time working together with others to create good change is something anyone can do and he has been known to recruit students to volunteer for ASP.

“He was a willing worker in Kentucky and was quick to help others as needed,” said Sharon Snodgrass, Lane’s ASP Leader. “He related to family members we worked for without reserve. He treated his peers with respect and was helpful to them when they needed his assistance.”

Lane intends to attend the University of Nebraska to major in business. The Chamber of Commerce will be holding the award ceremony 6 p.m. tonight at Supertel.
