Richard “Rick” Schaecher, 77, of Greenfield died Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield with burial in Greenfield Cemetery and full military graveside rites by Greenfield American Legion Head-Endres Post No. 265 and V.F.W. Post No. 5357. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal service. The Rev. Dr. Keith Schweitzer will officiate. Open visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the church with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials are in honor of Richard Schaecher to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Rick Schaecher, son of John J. Schaecher Sr. and Helen (Bell) Schaecher, was born June 5, 1942, in Omaha, Nebraska. Rick grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1959, he joined the Air Force, serving four years and nine months. Rick was stationed in the Philippines with temporary duty in Vietnam and earned several medals.
In 1963, Rick married Edith (Edie) Buhlmann in Omaha Nebraska. Rick worked several jobs in Omaha and joined Royal Brass and Hose as a salesman in 1983 until retirement in 2007. In 1977, the family moved to Greenfield and have been residing there since.
Rick served as an elder, Sunday School teacher and youth leader at Immanuel Lutheran Church, was a member of American Legion and Greenfield City Council for four years. He served as director of veterans affairs and served the veterans of Adair County from 2012 until retiring Jan. 1, 2019.
Rick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edie; daughter Robin of Washington State; son Ron (Jenny) Schaecher of Greenfield; granddaughters, Danielle (Joel) Klobnak of Greenfield, Lindsay (Doug) Pruitt of Bridgewater and Tiffany (Jeffrey) Ott of Greenfield; great-grandchildren, Landon and Grace Klobnak, Kendrick Madsen and Lexi and Jenna Pruitt; twin brother Robert “Bob” (Donna) Schaecher of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Shirley Schaecher of San Antonio. Texas, and Alyce Combs of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; seven nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Jr. in December 2018; parents-in-law, Emil and Elva Buhlmann; brothers-in-law Gary Combs and Fred Ebert; sister-in-law Peggy Ebert; dog Patches and cat Buddy.
