Thompson recognized as ‘Firefighter of the Year’

Gary Thompson said he was surprised to have been chosen as Creston Fire Department’s 2019 Firefighter of the Year, but Todd Jackson, CFD fire chief was not.

“He has a willingness to help; help others better their abilities as a firefighter,” said Jackson.

Thompson, 60, of Creston got his start as a volunteer firefighter in Lenox in 1989, where he served until 2001. In 2000, Thompson joined Creston Fire Department and became a certified first responder in 2001 and CFD’s captain in 2006. Thompson is certified in firefighter I and II, driver/operator, aerial operator, instructor, inspector, hazmat technician and various other areas.

“Gary is a very knowledgeable firefighter,” said Casey Carpenter, battalion chief. “He is very reliable, always comes in on his time off when he’s available to help out, and he’s always around with any answers for any questions anyone has.”

To be named firefighter of the year is special considering it is a designation which the recipient is nominated by his or her peers before being selected by the board of review.

Jackson said award ceremonies are sporadic, but are becoming more regular in an effort to recognize the dedication of his staff.

Because of its growing volunteer department, members also select a “Rookie of the Year,” which was awarded to Vincent Cox of Creston.

“This happens during our awards night, a formal occasion where we recognize the high achievements, the highest percentage of response to fire calls and training,” said Jackson.

Thompson said his duty was never about the recognition.

“I do it because I like the job and I like to help people,” he said.
