Daniel G. Shepherd, 76, of Tingley died Thursday, April 4, 2019.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Dwayne Henrichs, the Rev. Bill Armstrong and Paul Dykstra will officiate the service. Open visitation was Sunday, April 7, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Tingley Cemetery, north of Tingley. Dan, son of George and Audrey Shepherd, was born March 31, 1943, in Union County. He grew up in the Thayer and East Union School District. Dan joined the Navy in 1961.

On May 24, 1963, Dan married Phylis May Reynolds, immediately leaving for Camp Pendleton, California, where he was stationed as a Navy Corpsman. Dan’s professional life included four years in the Navy, 10 years as a manager for the P.M. Place stores, 24 years with Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent and manager, three years with Great American Crop Insurance and 10 years with Southern Iowa Rural Water Association.

Dan was a member of Walk to Emmaus, lay speaker for God’s Shepherds Pulpit Supply Ministry and helped form an annual men’s celebration. He also visited the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Dan is survived by his wife Phylis May; son Jeffrey Daniel; daughter Robin Rochelle (David Paul) Nordhues; granddaughters, Emilie Elizabeth and Abigail May; sisters, Judy Shepherd of Osceola and Dixie Shepherd of Miami, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Doris Weber of Ankeny, Sharon (Dennis) Swigart of Des Moines and Clenna “Roan” Shepherd of Dallas Center; many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, George and Audrey Shepherd; sisters, Frances Jones and Gretta Sue Shepherd Schlebach; brother Terry Mack and nephew Brian Engle.
