Leo V. Powell, 84, of Creston died Friday, March 15, 2019, at EveryStep Hospice Home in Creston.
Celebration of life memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave., in Creston. The Rev. Jim Morris will officiate the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Jerusalem United Methodist Church, northeast of Creston. Full military honors will be conducted by Theodore J. Marten's VFW Post No. 1797 of Creston. Open visitation with family present will be from 10 to 11 a.m. service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Leo Vaughn Powell, son of Charles Thomas Powell and Ruby Charlotte (Hardisty) Powell, was born Feb. 11, 1935, at his home in Adams County. He attended Creston Schools and graduated with the class of 1953. Leo served in the United State Navy, enlisting in January 1954. Following his honorable discharge Oct. 24, 1957, Leo returned to Creston.
On July 6, 1959, Leo married Bonnie Lou Towns at the Jerusalem United Methodist Church northeast of Creston. Leo worked at Office Machines in Creston as a typewriter repairman.
Leo is survived by his wife Bonnie Powell of Creston; daughters, Becky (Rod) Harris of Creston and Vicki (Doug) Hyke of Evansdale; son Jon (Carrie) Powell of Creston; grandchildren, Tyler Harris, Ethan Harris, Ashley Harris, Roger Powell (fiancée Meghan), Kristin (Michael) Rote, Luke Powell, Alexis Hyke (fiancée Tracy), Madison Hyke and Jessica Hyke; sister Loletta Welling of Mount Ayr; sisters-in-law, Virginia Cash of Monroe, Alberta (Eddie) Ehm of Arispe, Karen Schaff of Murray and Sharon Groff of Blockton; and nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ivan Groff, Charles (Mildred) Powell and Kenneth Powell; sister-in-law Thelma (Marvin) Clark; brothers-in-law, Rex Welling, Don Cash and Jack Schaff; and nephew Brian Lawrence.
