Ethel Irene Armstrong, 97, of Fontanelle died Monday, Feb. 25, 2019, at Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Fontanelle United Methodist Church with burial in Fontanelle Cemetery. The Rev. Cathy Nutting officiated the service. A luncheon was held at the church following the services at the cemetery. Visitation was one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. Ethel Irene Armstrong, daughter of James and Edith (Garst) Vanderpool, was born June 1, 1921, in Greenfield. Ethel graduated from Greenfield High School in 1939.
On Dec. 30, 1939, she married Kenneth Armstrong in Maryville, Missouri. For most of their marriage, they lived on a farm north of Fontanelle, moving into town in 1974. For several years, Ethel worked at Strom’s Grocery in Fontanelle.
Ethel is survived by her daughter Carol Mattox of Shelby; son Duane (Lois) Armstrong of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth in 2004; sisters, Nora Morrison, Ruth Richards, Julia Albro and Eleanor Hofmann; brother Merle Vanderpool and son-in-law Richard Mattox.
