Area leaders hopeful for Greenfield Shopko's future

Area leaders hopeful for local Shopko’s future

Shopko, a leading operator of general merchandise stores throughout the central, western, and Pacific Northwest regions of the United States announce Jan. 16 that it, along with its subsidiaries, had filed voluntary petitions for a court-supervised financial restructuring under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.

The company, a release stated, is seeking to facilitate the restructuring as a result of excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures.

A list was released of store closures, showing that 105 of 367 Shopko stores company-wide are closing. Greenfield’s location, at 202 SW Kent, was not listed as one of those that are closing.

Furthermore, a list was more recently released showing pharmacies that are closing due to an auctioning process the company conducted to rid itself of its pharmacies. That list again, as of Tuesday, did not show Greenfield’s pharmacy as a closing pharmacy, though there is no official word available specifically on the pharmacy’s status.

A call to Greenfield Store Manager Scott Wymer resulted in Wymer saying he regrettably couldn’t comment on the situation at this time. Michelle Hansen, with Public Relations at Shopko’s headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was also unable to comment.

Stacie Hull, Executive Director at Greenfield Chamber/Main Street and Development, was unable to give a comment on this specific situation at this time but said she still remains positive.
