Bernard Smith, 71, of Creston died Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Creston Specialty Care in Creston.

No public services will be held. Private service were held by the family. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.

Bernard Allen Smith, son of Elizabeth Ida (Ripperger) Smith and Gail Allen Smith, was born May 16, 1946, in Des Moines. He was educated in Des Moines schools.

On Oct. 17, 1966, Bernard married Linda Lee Parker in Bethany, Missouri. They lived and worked in Creston.

Bernard entered the United States Army in March of 1968. He was honorably discharged after a brief time, due to medical reasons. Returning to Creston, Bernard worked at Gambles Hardware Store in Creston. He also painted houses and did general home repair. Bernard went on disability in 1974. Linda died April 1, 1977.

On April 10, 1979, Bernard married Linda Lou Purscell in Creston. They lived in Creston. Linda Lou died July 5, 2014.

Bernard is survived by his sons Larry Smith of Lorimor and Tom Smith (significant other Dee Scott) of Dayton, Texas; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Mike, Tom, Calvin, Eugene and Dennis Smith and sisters, Monica, JoAnn and Gail.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; first wife of 10 years, Linda (Parker) Smith; second wife of 35 years, Linda (Purscell) Smith; son Brian Smith; granddaughter Amber Smith-Harper; brother Norman Smith and daughter-in-law Julie Stewart Smith.
