Friday football recap: T'wolves, Tigers sent home from playoffs

CORNING — With their sights set so far, the Southwest Valley Timberwolves' dome dreams came crashing down before them in a 34-14 home loss to Gehlen Catholic.

The visiting Jays had a plan, and that included being physical and going right through the heart of the No. 2 ranked Timberwolf defense.

They found great success in that respect from the beginning of Friday's frigid contest.

Adam Ellensohn capped a 53-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the game.

The 6-0 score held until 5:32 left in the second quarter, when Elijah Freking, who had a career night, capped a 92-yard drive with a 5-yard rumble up the middle. He also caught the two-point conversion pass.

Southwest Valley miscues, including dropped passes, hurt it in the first half, as well as a failure to stop Gehlen Catholic on a fake punt late in the half.

Cole Wiltgen connected with Xavier Roberts on one of several flag routes that moved the chains, this time to the one, and several plays later, Freking caught Wiltgen's bootleg pass to the right for another score.

After Bryan Nohava's extra point, the Jays led 21-0 at the half.

A Timberwolf muffed punt led to another Ellensohn rushing touchdown before Southwest Valley was able to score on a 49-yard Chance Cobb option keeper to make the score 28-7.

Gehlen Catholic responded definitely when Ellensohn's 50-yard tough rumble put Gehlen in scoring position for Izaac Herbst to then catch a touchdown pass for a 34-7 lead.

The Timberwolves scored once more on a 50-yard catch over the middle by Addison Bull, in which he evaded several would-be-tacklers to get to the end zone.

"Seniors, you left it better than when you got here," Southwest Valley coach Anthony Donahoo said. "When you got here, you were a 1-8 football team. Now, you're a 9-0 football team."

Southwest Valley finished 9-1. Gehlen Catholic (8-2) will unofficially play at St. Albert (9-1) next week after the Falcons' 27-0 win over Westwood, Sloan.

Sidney 50, Lenox 12

SIDNEY — Lenox could not find ways to stop Sidney's high-powered rushing attack in a 50-12 road loss to dash further playoff dreams.

Sidney grabbed the lead early, and scored four touchdowns in the first half on its way to a 29-0 halftime lead. A pass interception when Lenox quarterback Carter Still was hit on the release led to the Cowboys touchdown that made it 22-0 late in the first quarter. The gap stretched to 29-0 when Sergio Rodriguez got open down the middle for a 68-yard touchdown reception from Cameron Whitehead.

Lenox was stopped on fourth-and-goal late in the half on a quarterback sack.

Bryson Duncan returned the opening kickoff of the second half 74 yards to up Sidney's lead to 36-0.

Carter Still completed touchdown passes to Colton Gordon (54 yards) and Brenden Christensen (13 yards). Still accounted for 163 yards of offense through the air and ran for a net 44 yards, the victim of several sacks in the game.

Duncan carred 23 times for 104 yards for the Cowboys (10-0), who host district rival Fremont-Mills in the quarterfinals. The Cowboys won the previous meeting, 45-35.

Whitehead ran seven times for 49 yards and a touchdown and was 3 of 8 passing for 124 yards and two TDs for Sidney. Cody Dupre had a 46-yard rushing touchdown and a 49-yard reception for a score.

Lenox's defense settled in during the second half, allowing only one touchdown by the Sidney offense. The other two Cowboy scores of the half were on Behrends' interception return and Duncan's kick return.

Lenox bows out at 5-5 after earning a playoff spot by taking second place in District 6. District champion Stanton was also eliminated Friday, 63-0, by Fremont-Mills.
