The Creston Community High School marching band, made up of 105 students, earned a one rating at the State Marching Band Contest in Glenwood Oct. 18 for the 29th year in a row.

Creston Community High School Band Instructor Mike Peters said the success of earning 29 one ratings took planning, designing and the dedication of more than 100 students each year to achieve.

“We underestimate how much kids can do when they’re motivated,” said Peters. “We have a team of talented leaders leading talented kids.”

All-State Music Festival will hold its 71st event 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in Hilton Coliseum on the Iowa State University campus in Ames.

Tickets to the event are $22 each, plus fees, and all seats are reserved. Tickets are available at the ISU Athletics Ticket Office or through Ticketmaster.

Creston Community High School junior Isaac Finehout was selected for All-State on clarinet and sophomore Brittany Linch was selected as first alternate on trumpet.

“Mr. Peters challenged me to do it, and I’m happy with the spot I earned,” said Finehout.

Linch said she was disapointed to have gotten an alternate spot, but was still happy to have made it that far for All-State.

As first alternate, if any trumpet player is unable to attend the All-State Music Festival, Linch will be brought in to participate.

“If you can handle All-State auditions, you can handle any job interview you’ll ever have,” said Peters.

Iowa Public Television will record the concert for re-broadcast. The festival will be aired 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 23. The program is sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association.
