Joann C. Kirkhart, 92, of Lorimor passed away in her sleep Monday, May 22, 2017, at Winterset Care Center South.
There was a private family viewing before cremation Wednesday, May 24, at Ochiltree Funeral Service, 1823 N. John Wayne Dr., in Winterset. A family gathering for interment at Lorimor Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Order of the Eastern Star No. 180 in Winterset. Joann Charlotte Kirkhart was born Jan. 24, 1925, to Raymond E. and Lenora “Irene” (Slaughter) Strain of Lorimor. On June 15, 1945, she married Allan Leaton Kirkhart. He preceded her in death on July 15, 1996.
Joann graduated from Lorimor High School in 1942 and taught school at New Hope No. 3 until she moved to Des Moines. After her marriage, she and Allan settled in Lorimor where she became a homemaker and mother. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star, an original founding member of the Merry Fu Book Club and a member of Lorimor United Methodist Church. She also served on the Lorimor City Council and was involved in many community activities.
Joann took her hobbies seriously and taught ceramics and porcelain classes in her shop. Her hands were always busy and most recently involved in jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by her three children, Roxanne King of Greenwood, Missouri, Alynn Huffman (Gary) of Central City, Colorado, and Rodric Kirkhart of Lorimor; sister Twyla Walton of Branson, Missouri; brother Bruce Strain of Surprise, Arizona; four grandchildren, Raquel Benson (Bill) of Aurora, Colorado, Raelynn King-Barnhart of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, David Huffman (Ada) of Golden, Colorado, and Rayna Huffman (Dave) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and five great-grandchildren, Meagan and Madison Nelson, Samantha and Sydney Barnhart and Renne Huffman.
