Betty Lee (Collier) Hudson was born July 24, 1922, on a farm in southern Union County to Floyd Collier and Sadie (Lee) Collier. She was the second daughter and had one sister and two brothers. She graduated from Ellston in 1939 at the age of 16, and a few months later, Betty was united in marriage to Aldwin Hudson on June 15, 1939. This union was blessed with three boys and one girl; Phillip, Ronald, Alan and Debra. Arden and Evelyn Baker stood up with them at their wedding and remained lifelong friends.
Betty worked part-time in the Arispe post office and was a 4-H leader, while raising the family. They lived in Arispe eight years, and then moved to a farm south and east of Kent for 10 years. They got involved in the Prairie Star Church and Betty and the boys joined as members. After a time, the church had to close because of small membership and they transferred to Creston First Presbyterian Church. The family moved to Creston in 1960 and Betty worked as a bookkeeper for Gambles for six years, then Don Moore Music Store in Creston as the bookkeeper for 17 1/2 years, which changed hands to Rieman Music Inc., where she continued to work until her retirement in 1986. They enjoyed traveling and sightseeing.
Betty was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Creston where she was active in many of their committees, serving all offices in her circle, teaching Sunday school and Bible school, serving as an elder and on session committees. She also joined the Appalachian Service Project, going south to Appalachia three years. Betty was also a member of Business and Professional Women, Creston Women’s Club, Greater Community Hospital Auxiliary, besides the Presbyterian Quilters Group. She has made nine baby quilts for the “Greats” and some full-size bed quilts. She also made wall hangings, some for the fall bazaar, besides noodles, canning and baking products to sell. She lost Aldwin in 1986. Betty loved her church and enjoyed the functions there, and also the church families.
Betty is survived by her two sons, Phillip (wife Frances) Hudson and Alan (wife Cathie) Hudson, all of Creston; daughter Debra Hudson of Columbia, Missouri; daughter-in-law Charlene Hudson of Creston; grandchildren, Phillip Michael (wife Barb) Hudson of Kent, Christopher (wife Diane) Hudson of Lenox, Ann (husband Jason) Davis of Creston, Leslie Ann (husband Steve) Luther of Creston, Lori (husband Jeff) Fry of Creston, Melissa (husband John) Sickels of Creston, Clint (wife Teresa) Hudson of Pella, Denise Hudson-Moore of Creston and Courtney Herron of Columbia, Missouri; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and brother Jean Collier of Simi Valley, California.
