Homer Tanner, 90, of Orient died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Orient United Methodist Church with burial in Greenfield Cemetery. Phil Cannon will officiate the service. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home, 101 SE Fourth St., in Greenfield. Homer Hubert Tanner, son of John Phillip and Agnes Alberta (Frank) Tanner, was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Prescott. Homer grew up in Adams County and Carbon, and later, southwest of Fontanelle.
On Jan. 15, 1950, he married Norma Jean Hogan. Homer raised cattle and farmed in Adair County all of his life and most of it was west of Orient where he still resided. He retired from farming in 2013.
Homer was a member of Greenfield Gospel Chapel, served on the board of Farmers Lumber Company in Fontanelle, read meters for the REC for many years, was a 4-H leader, received an honorary FFA degree from Orient-Macksburg, served as treasurer for National Farmers Organization of Adair County and was a trustee for Richland Township.
Homer is survived by his children, Sharon Tanner of Omaha, Nebraska, Allen Tanner (Candi) of Creston, Roger Tanner (Robbie) of Greenfield, Kevin Tanner of Bridgewater and exchange student Rudy Sy of Philippines (Julie and daughter RJ); grandchildren, Kirk (Jodi), Kory (Amy), Casey, Cole and Cody; great-grandchildren, Haylee, Brooke, Ryann, Brayden, Cohen, Korbyn and Kellyn; special friend June Eshelman of Fontanelle; brother-in-law Dean Hogan (Linda) of Lenox; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma in 1995; sisters, Hannah Chatterton, Hilda Hanks, Helen Woods and Haretta Emmel; brothers, Harley, Harold and Hank Tanner; mother- and father-in-law, Maurice and Grace Hogan; brother-in-law Dennis Hogan; nieces, Clevune Thompson and Helen Lou Westphal; and nephew Lotus Hanks.
