Panther wrestlers sweep Thursday duals

Tough tests await Saturday in Marshalltown

CARROLL — Creston/Orient-Macksburg had to shuffle its lineup a bit around during Thursday’s Hawkeye 10 Conference quad due to various injuries and skin ailments.

The Panthers still found plenty of ways to dominate all three duals in sweeping the night.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg, ranked third in Class 2A, defeated Clarinda 55-9, Kuemper Catholic 57-15 and shut out St. Albert 82-0.

The Panthers were missing regulars at 106, 152 and 285 pounds.

The absences allowed others to step into the varsity lineup

Those wrestlers competed well given the opportunity.

“The fact that they got the opportunity to wrestle in some tough matches was good for them,” said Creston/Orient-Macksburg coach Darrell Frain.

The entire team put together a good effort in its first action since the Kansas City Stampede on Dec. 16-17.

“Every kid wrestled hard. They fought for every point,” Frain said. “When we did lose, we had a chance to win. That’s what we ask out of them. We felt good about every kid that walked onto the mat.”

Tough practices since Kansas City showed in the effort the Panthers gave Thursday.

“We had hard practices out of the break,” Frain said. “That’s what we were asking out of the guys — to step up and wrestle their butts off as hard as they could.”

Even in the few matches Creston/Orient-Macksburg didn’t win, they were still in those matches, Frain said.

UP NEXT — Creston/Orient-Macksburg travels to Marshalltown Saturday for the Marshalltown Dual Team Tournament.

Among the teams in the field include Class 2A second-ranked Solon, Johnston, Norwalk and Webster City.

While dual team tournaments are not Frain’s favorite, this tournament works well for the Panthers after Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s home tournament was scrapped from the schedule.

“It’s a step up in competition,” Frain said. “I’ve stayed out of dual tournaments. We decided to give it a shot. It’s something that worked out for our schedule.”
