Donald E. Weis, 89, of Afton died Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at his home in Afton.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. The Rev. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be in St. Edward's Cemetery in Afton. Open visitation was from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Military graveside honors will be given by V.F.W. Posts of Afton and Creston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Edward Catholic Cemetery near Afton. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.
Donald Edward Weis, son of Albert Paul Weis and Mary Katharine (Brosnahan) Weis, was born Sept. 25, 1927, at home near Afton. He was raised in Afton and graduated from Arispe High School.
On Oct. 13, 1951, Don married Anna Louise Swanson at St. Joseph’s Parish in Des Moines. He served his country as a sergeant with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He spent two months in Japan and 13 months in Korea. He was honorably discharged in April 1953. They lived their entire married life together in the Afton area where Donald farmed. Donald retired from farming in 1992.
Donald was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton, the Afton V.F.W. and a former member of Knights of Columbus.
Donald is survived by his wife Anna of Afton; sons, Stephen (Della) Weis of Fort Worth, Texas, Alan (Kelly) Weis of Afton, Brian Weis of Creston, Michael (Valerie) Weis of Norwalk, Carl (Brooke) Weis of Norwalk, Louis (Cindy) Weis of Elk Point, South Dakota, Thomas (Dawn) Weis of Stanton and Matthew (Julie) Weis of Creston; daughters, Callista (Joseph - deceased) Slorah of Indianola, Jocelyn Weis of Des Moines, Jennifer Weis (Tim White) of Rochester, Minnesota, Margaret (Frank) Kenealy of Waverly and Laura Weis of Tolono, Illinois; grandchildren, Delfin, Ashley, Jessie, Adam, Sarah, Stormy, Cheyanne, Albert, Kristin, Jake, Sam, Jamie, Ben, Kae Anna, Ty, Alex, Anna, John, Becca, Tommy, Katie, Nick, Joseph, Haley, Chelsea, Donnie, Samantha, George and Owen; great-grandchildren, Carson, Kendall, Chloe, Cal, Gracie, Sawyer, Will, Harper, Bronx, Emmett and Jay; brothers, Fritz (Lois) Weis, Edwin (Kate) Weis and Harry (Joanne - deceased) Weis; sister Jeannie (Leonard) Pettit; brother-in-law Ralph (Mary) Swanson of Kimberly City, Missouri; and sisters-in-law, Agnes Eklund of Afton and Irene Peppmeier of Creston.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Donna Weis; sister Frances (Ang) Scrandoli; brother Pete (Ava Jean) Weis and brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Bunny Swanson, Raymond Eklund, Earl Peppmeier and Carl Swanson.
