Marshel D. Fredrickson, 92, of Creston died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. The Rev. Kenneth Halbur, Jr. will officiate. Cremation will follow the Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Creston with military honors by Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797. Open visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., in Creston. Christian wake service will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to Holy Spirit Catholic Church and St. Malachy School. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

Marshel Dean Fredrickson, son of William “Bud” Martin and Elsie Anna (Petershon) Fredrickson, was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Creston. Marshel graduated eighth grade at St. Malachy School in June 1938 and from Creston High School with the class of 1942.

Marshel was inducted into the United States Army in July 1943. Marshel was stationed in Wales in the 28th Division. They went by L.S.D. boat to Omaha Beach, Normandy, France, on the sixth day of the invasion. After 30 days, a German shell hit the hedge rows and four of their men were blown out of their fox holes. Marshel was hit and had three surgeries to remove the shrapnel from his leg. He received the European, Middle East Theatre ribbons, bronze star, good conduct medal, purple heart and meritorious unit award. Marshel was honorably discharged in January 1946.

Upon returning from the service, Marshel worked for Kerr-Cochran Chevrolet garage detailing cars and operating the wrecker.

On Feb. 28, 1949, Marshel married Agnes C. Waske at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. He worked at the Creston Hospital as a purchasing agent for 20 years, U.S. Post Office, owned the restaurant Midget Café located on N. Maple Street, was a switchman on the railroad and managed the Conoco Gas Station.

Marshel was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, VFW Post and Lakeshore Golf Club.

Marshel is survived by his children, Connie Fredrickson of Creston, David (Donna) Fredrickson of Polk City and John Fredrickson of Afton; grandchildren, Andy and Matt and Caleb and Elaina; great-grandchildren, Lorellye, Lilly and Lenden and Taylor and Teryn; sisters-in-law, Norma Fredrickson of Arizona, Alice Fredrickson of California and Joan Waske of Afton; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Marshel was preceded in death by his parents; wife Agnes in 2012; brothers, Martin Fredrickson and Willard Fredrickson; sister Barbara Miller and brother-in-law Dwight Miller.
