Bluegrass all-conference softball selections released

Seven Murray Mustangs and one Orient-Macksburg Bulldog were awarded spots on the 2016 Bluegrass All-Conference Softball Team.

Freshmen Kayla Wookey, Breianna Klein and Hailey Chew earned first team honors, as did senior Madison Gonseth and junior Brandi Gilbert.

Klein hit a team-high .519, 56 hits, 23 doubles, 44 runs batted, had a slugging percentage of .944 in and seven home runs. Klein also started 17 games in the pitching circle, maintained a 12-5 record, had a 2.32 earned run average and struck out 114 batters.

Wookey led the way in the circle in 16 starts and 22 overall appearances pitching. Wookey struck out 176 batters in 100 and two thirds. She had a 13-3 record and posted a 1.18 E.R.A.

Chew was thrust into an outfield role and hit from the top of the lineup for most of the season. She hit .282 and had a .390 on base percentage.

Gonseth earned first-team honors by leading from first base and hitting .451 with 12 doubles, three home runs and 33 RBIs.

Junior catcher Brandi Gilbert handled the pitching staff and easily led the team with 21 steals. She hit .421 with four home runs, 36 RBIs, 13 doubles, two triples, and slugged .726.

Juniors Katie Otto and Meghan Gould were named second team all-Bluegrass.

Otto consistently held down center field and started all 32 games. She batted .240.

Gould stepped in and played shortsop in the absence of an injured McKenzie McIntosh. She hit .294 and got on base at a .419 rate.

Eighth grader Kaela Eslinger was named honorable mention. Eslinger pitched every game for a team that went from zero wins in 2015 to four in 2016. She hit .386 and had a .518 on base percentage.
