Middle school wrestling
GLENWOOD — A Creston/O-M group of wrestlers in sixth-eighth grades won the championship of the Western Iowa Middle School Duals Sunday.
Teams attending were from Atlantic, Carroll, Clarinda, Creston/O-M, Glenwood, Gretna, Neb., Logan-Magnolia, Nebraska City (Neb.), Oakland Riverside and Van Meter.
Creston/O-M outscored five opponents by a combined score of 269-63 in five duals and defeated Logan-Magnolia, 63-6, in the championship dual.
Coach Jeff Sand said the event was a good opportunity to wrestle against a variety of teams from throughout the region. The young Panthers defeated Van Meter, Clarinda, Nebraska City and Riverside before the championship round victory over L-M.
“The Glenwood duals is a great opportunity for our seventh, seventh and eighth-graders to compete against very tough, competitive local wrestling clubs from central and western Iowa, as well as Nebraska,” Sand said. “Throughout our middle school season, our main emphasis is constant improvement, but this is a tournament we tell the wrestlers our goal is to win . We knew there would be stiff competition there, and the fact that we gave up one forfeit at 230 pounds as well as bumping some guys up weight classes to fill in our roster would possibly make this a tough meet to win. Yet, our boys came out firing.”
Sand said the convincing margin of victory is a testament to the work behind the scenes by coaches and youths in the local Express club, as well as the middle school team.
“It always feels good to win a tournament, but when we put in a performance like we did on Sunday, against the competition we had, it really is a testament to the hard work our wrestlers put in every practice and every meet,” Sand said. “We have a great wrestling program from pre--K and kindergarten through our high school program. Our boys want and expect to win at all levels, and that was very evident in the Glenwood duals.”

WINTERSET — A 20-2 first quarter set the tone for Creston’s 51-11 victory over the Winterset seventh-grade girls Thursday.
Six different payers scored between six and 10 points in a balanced attack for Creston, led by Braelyn Baker and Peyton Rice with 10 points each. Baker had seven of the team’s 30 steals and Rachel Boyer had eight. Rice, Samantha Dunphy and Kelsey Fields each grabbed six rebounds.
“Through three quarters the girls had only allowed seven points, so their effort on defense continues to be consistent,” said Creston coach Larry Peterson. “We have tougher challenges ahead in the coming week against Red Oak and Atlantic.”
Creston avenged an early 22-11 defeat in winning the second game, 19-14. Morgan Buxton scored 10 points and Katie Adair grabbed 12 rebounds.

CLARINDA — Clarinda won a pair of close eighth-grade boys games Thursday, 40-31 in the first game and 12-6 in the second contest.
Eli Loudon scored 16 points for Creston, which played a strong second half.
“We came out slow in the first half, not executing our offense well,” said coach Scott Wagner. “We had plenty of open looks but couldn’t hit our jumpers. Defensively I was pretty happy with our halfcourt defense, but they were able to get some fast breaks on us that really opened their lead. We played really aggressive in the second half to make a small comeback but just didn’t have enough time for the full comeback.”
Terry Hudgens scored three points for Creston in the 15-minute second game.
“We came out flat in this game and couldn’t work the ball in their zone defense,” Wagner said. “We would get the ball down low but couldn’t do much with it. Defensively they hit a few shots that were well-defended and that turned out to be the difference.”
Creston A (31) — Eli Loudon 16, Gavin Gillam 5, Devin Baker 4, Austin Bloyd 4, Eli Hartman 2.
