Margaret Penfold, 92, of Corning died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Corning Specialty Care in Corning.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at St. Timothy-Reno Catholic Church, in Cumberland. The Rev. Bob Dufford and the Rev. Lazarus Kirigia will be celebrants. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 701 Seventh St., in Corning. A rosary service will take place at 5:30 p.m. Interment will be in St. Timothy-Reno Catholic Cemetery, in Cumberland. Memorials may be directed in her name, to be determined. Margaret Adellyn Penfold, daughter of Edward LeRoy “Roy” and Lois Mary (Frederick) Maeder, was born July 3, 1923, at home in Lincoln Township in rural Adams County. She attended rural school through the eighth grade, and graduated from Corning High School in 1940. Upon passing the state test and being 18 years old, she began teaching in rural Lincoln Township schools after graduation. She attended the University of Iowa for one year and then returned to teach at Lincoln No. 1 School for 6 and a-half years, and then Lincoln No. 6 School for one year.
On April 8, 1947, Margaret married Harley Lyle Penfold at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church, in Reno. They began farming in the “Dog Hollow” area before moving to rural Washington Township. They moved to Douglas Township in 1973 and remained there until Margaret moved to Corning in 1994. Margaret worked at Archer Flower Shop in Corning and Job Service of Iowa for 19 years. She worked as a farmwife and homemaker. Margaret spent many years participating in the local farmers market in Corning and as a vendor in many craft shows.
Margaret was a member of the Corning St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Alter Society, Rose Ann Auxiliary and the Farmers Market. She also enjoyed her involvement with the the 4-H program, when her children were young.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Barbara (Stanley) Roberts of Corning; son Steven (Jacque) Penfold of Loveland, Colorado; grandchildren, Lisa (John) Henkenius of Bridgewater, Nichol (Kerry) Smithers of Dallas, Texas, Aaron (Lorrie) Roberts of Adel, Jeremy Penfold of Boulder, Colorado, and Erik Penfold of Anchorage, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Jordan (Tyler) Evans of Indianola, Wyatt Henkenius of Pella, Taylor Henkenius of Bridgewater, Benjamin and Abigail Smithers of Dallas, Texas, and Evan and Owen Roberts of Adel; brother Bernard (Margaret) Maeder of Lincoln Center; sister Eleanor (Darrell) Ogburn of Mt. Etna; sister-in-law Hazel Maeder of Corning; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harley in 1990; daughter Marjorie in 1953; brother Edward Maeder; sister Naomi Bench; brother’s-in-law, Bill Bench and Hollis Penfold and sister-in-law Dorothy Penfold.
