Panthers No. 1 in preseason Class 2A wrestling rankings

State champion Shiltz No. 1 at 170 pounds

Creston/Orient-Macksburg, led by “pound for pound” state rankings leader Chase Shiltz from the junior class, is ranked No. 1 in Class 2A on the preseason wrestling rankings released Wednesday by IAwrestle.com, a statewide wrestling news site.

The Panthers have five ranked individual wrestlers, led by Shiltz — currently sidelined by a broken hand suffered in football — listed No. 1 at 170 pounds. Shiltz is also the “pound for pound” top wrestler from this year’s junior class. Ranked third in the sophomore pound for pound list is Anthony Sherry of Glenwood, who is ranked second at 170 pounds behind Shiltz.

Other Panthers in the rankings include Wyatt Thompson, Seth Maitlen and Kadon Hulett, all ranked No. 2 at 138, 195 and 220 pounds, respectively; along with senior Joey Huntington ranked seventh at 152 pounds.

Bedford/Lenox junior Jared Hensley is ranked sixth at 120 pounds in Class 2A.

(IAwrestle.com does not include freshmen in the preseason rankings.)

New Hampton, coached by former Creston/O-M assistant Nick Hemann, is ranked 10th in Class 2A.

The Class 1A rankings include Ben Freese of Nodaway Valley, sixth at 120 pounds; and East Union’s Kessler Tomas, 10th at 220 pounds.
