RED OAK — The Creston seventh-grade girls concluded an undefeated season with a big second half in beating Red Oak Monday, 33-10.
Creston (11-0) held just an 8-6 halftime lead, similar to the first meeting when Red Oak trailed only 15-12 at the break. As in the previous game, Creston gained momentum quickly in the second half, scoring 25 unanswered points to take a 33-6 lead in the fourth quarter. It was 23-6 at the end of the third period.
Brielle Baker had 14 points and 10 of Creston’s 24 steals in the game. Megan Haley had six points, five rebounds and five steals.
“The girls really turned it up a notch in the second half, holding Red Oak scoreless until the final two minutes,” Creston coach Larry Peterson said. “Much of the scoring came from good transition passes after steals in the open court. It was fun to watch them play so unselfishly in their last game of the season.”
Creston also wrapped up a 9-2 B season with a 20-0 victory. Jesse Vicker scored eight points and Devon Buls had six.
“Two straight shutouts to end the season is a great way for these kids to end their season,” Peterson said. “I was proud of the hustle they showed to constantly disrupt the Red Oak offense. Jesse Vicker got the fast break going and Devon Buls controlled the inside with a lot of help from Breanna Ross and Kaitlyn Osmun.”

RED OAK — Cayla Maitlen’s shot at the buzzer bounced around the rim and out as the Creston eighth-grade girls were nipped by Red Oak Monday, 15-14.
Creston (2-9) led 8-5 at halftime and for much of the second half. Taylor Fredrickson had six points and five rebounds for Creston, and Chloe Hagle added four points and five rebounds.
“The girls definitely left it all out on the floor in their last middle school game,” Creston coach Sarah Stephens said. “They were ahead the whole game until late in the fourth quarter, when we gave up two offensive rebounds that turned into four points for the other team. We had a chance to win at the buzzer but the shot just didn’t fall for us.”
Stephens expressed pride in the team’s development.
“Our record does not reflect the amount of growth this team has made this season,” Stephens said. “They have really learned how to play as a team and they are enjoying playing the game.”
The B game ended in a 4-4 tie.
“These girls have also shown so much improvement as the season has gone on,” Stephens said. “They have really learned the fundamentals of basketball and being a team on the floor. Tonight the shots just were not falling for us.”
