Mother saved in Saturday shooting in Creston

A teenager may have saved his mother's life Saturday evening when he pushed a Creston man who was firing a pistol at his mother.

The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening at 613 N. Elm St.

According to a Creston Police report, Steven Lynn Dewitt, 54, allegedly fired one round at a woman in the house, but the round missed because the woman's son pushed Dewitt as he fired the weapon.

"This has similar facts to the Arispe case last week," said Tim Kenyon, Union County attorney. "This was a domestic dispute, a weapon was involved and at least one shot was fired."

Creston Police, Union County Sheriff's department and other local law enforcement responded to the 911 call Saturday evening, and they were met at the front door of the residence by the woman, her son and a neighbor.

Law enforcement officials advanced to the porch of the residence and ordered Dewitt to exit, but received no response. Officers then backed away and set up a perimeter. A short time later, Dewitt did exit the residence through the back door.

Dewitt was charged with domestic abuse assault with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor. Dewitt is currently being held at the Union County Jail on $50,000.

The police report also states Dewitt pulled out a large clump of the woman's hair. Officers did find strands of hair beside the bed in the residence. A preliminary hearing for Dewitt has been scheduled for next week.
