GOLF: Wolverines unfazed by stiff conditions

Wolverine senior golfer Zack Gebbie considers his next shot in a meet recently at Mount Ayr.

The Nodaway Valley boys golf team joined the girls golf team in Indianola last week for a Pride of Iowa Conference meet against Martensdale-St. Marys. The Wolverine boys beat the Blue Devils by a team score of 182 to 233. MStM won the girl’s meet as the Wolverines did not have a scoring team. Lenox also was in competition on the boys side but did not factor into the team scores.

The Wolverine boys were led by Landon Klobnak and Zach Gebbie at the meet. The seniors had two of five NV scores in the top five places at the meet. Klobnak shot a one-over-par score of 37 to claim medalist honors. He shot par on the first seven holes.

Zack Gebbie was seven over par, shooting a 44 to gain runner-up medalist honors. He bogeyed on the eighth hole but recovered to again shoot par on the nine hole, as he had the first seven.

“Landon Klobnak particularly shone today, shooting an impressive 37, finishing seven strokes ahead of 2nd place. With the wind and course conditions, he wanted to play everything at a slower speed, focusing on control and not power. That paid off,” said boys head coach Joel Klobnak.

Other top-5 finishers were Bradley Gebbie in third with a score of 48, Sam Miller in fourth with a score of 53 and Xander Hogan in fifth with a score of 53.

Nodaway Valley’s other score was from Ty Rardin with a score of 64.

On the girls side, Nodaway Valley took four golfers to the meet. There, the Wolverines did not have enough to score as a team, however, senior Ashlyn Gutierrez earned runner-up medalist honors, shooting a score of 51. Martensdale-St. Marys’ Abigail White was the medalist with a score two strokes under Gutierrez at 49.

Gutierrez shot two over par on four holes and one-over par on three holes. She hit for par on the eighth hole. For the meet, the eighth hole went well for the four NV players as three hit par and one hit one-over par on the hole in the meet.

“Despite facing some challenges, Ashlyn demonstrated strategic play throughout the tournament. She meticulously considered each club and approached every shot with precision,” said girls coach Julie Hartman.

Nodaway Valley’s other scores were Brailyannn Coffman 55, Bella Hogan 56 and Mallory Russell 58.

Coffman shot three holes with par on a par 3 eighth hole, and par-4 holes six and nine. Hogan took some time to settle in. After the first four holes, she shot three holes with bogeys and another hole with par. Russell shot two over par on four holes and one over par on two holes. She settled in and shot well on the final three holes of the meet and was three over on the final three holes.
