GIRLS TRACK: NV 4x100-meter relay qualifies for Drake Relays

NV's Allie Cornelison clears a hurdle during a recent meet in Earlham.

The 114th Drake Relays are this week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, and late last week, qualifying high school events were released. Nodaway Valley’s girls 4x100-meter relay team was one of the 96 qualifying relays from all classes.

On the team are Grace Britten, Maddie Weston, Emma Lundy and Annika Nelson. They will run 9:40 a.m. Saturday. What heat and lane the Wolverines will run in were not released as of late Sunday night. The quartet’s qualifying time of 51.81 seconds was ran Tuesday, April 9 in Earlham. Their time also leads the Pride of Iowa Conference in the event. They’re sixth-best statewide right now in Class 1A.

The Wolverines ran at the Martensdale-St. Marys co-ed meet Thursday, April 18. There, the Wolverines placed fourth in the team scores with a total of 80 points. There were six scoring teams at the meet. Interstate-35 won the meet, holding off runner-up Lynnville-Sully. The Roadrunners won the meet with 125 points while the Hawks were second, only three points behind at 122 points. Des Moines Christian was third with 91 points.

The Wolverines won three events at the meet. Nodaway Valley captured the top-2 finishes in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash events.

Maddie Weston won the 100-meter dash in 13.01 and Emma Lundy placed second in 13.02. Both times were season best times for the duo. With those times, both are moving closer to cracking the top-10 100-meter dash times in Class 1A. Weston is 12th and Lundy 13th. The duo is currently second and third in the Pride of Iowa Conference in the 100.

Weston and Lundy switched spots in the 200. Lundy won the 200-meter dash in 26.95 while Weston was the runner-up in a time of 27.73. Weston’s time was also a season best. Lundy currently has the second best time in the POI while Weston has the fifth best. Lundy added a runner-up finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.90.

Jazz Christensen had a pair of top-10 finishes, led by a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in 13:33.36. She also was 10th in the 1,500-meter run. Megan McCall was eighth in the 800-meter run.

Jorja Holliday won shot put with a top throw of 32 feet, 5 inches, and was the runner-up in the discus with a best throw of 91 feet, 6 inches. Grace Britten added a fifth place finish in the shot put and a seventh place finish in the discus. Addison Glade was sixth in the long jump.

The Wolverines changed up their relay lineups at the meet. Nodaway Valley placed in three of their four relay events they ran in the top-5 of the event. A fourth relay placed sixth.

Nodaway Valley’s highest relay finish came from their 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays. The Wolverines 4x200 team of Grace Britten, Allie Cornelison, Glade and Christensen was fourth in a time of 2:10.62. The Wolverines’ 4x400 team of Joanna Larson, Lundy, Weston and Kylie Nelson was fourth in 4:41.26. NV placed fifth in the 4x800-meter relay with Kylie Nelson, Larson, McCall and Christensen in 12:41.24. The other relay finish for NV was a sixth-place finish in the distance medley.

On Monday, April 15, the Wolverines had a smaller squad due to a variety of reasons and were one of 12 teams at Van Meter’s Bill Miller Relays. The Wolverines placed 11th with a team score of 19 points.

The Wolverines won one event and placed three others in the top-5 at the meet.

Lundy won the 200-meter dash in 27.07 to give the Wolverines their highest event placing. The girls were third in the distance medley in 4:45.52 to give them their highest relay finish. They added fifth place finishes from Grace Britten in Shot Put (29 feet, 1 inch) and Weston in the 100-meter dash in 13.43.

The Wolverines will be back on the track this week in a meet Tuesday at Madrid and Wednesday at Griswold. At the same time, they’ll be turning their attention to the Drake Relays Saturday for the 4x100-meter relay’s big showcase.
