Hulett, two Tigers on all-district second teams

Creston’s Kadon Hulett and two Lenox players are among the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association’s all-district players announced recently.

First and second teams are selected in each classificaiton.

Hulett, a sophomore pitcher and first baseman, is on the Class 3A West District second team as a pitcher. He finished 4-1 this year with a team-high nine starts and a 1.59 ERA. In 48 innings pitched he had 53 strikeouts, 15 walks and allowed only 30 hits. Opponents batted .148 against him.

Hulett went nine innings in a 4-3 district final loss to state semifinalist Harlan in 12 innings. In that game Hulett allowed six hits, three earned runs, walked four and struck out 10 against the Cyclones. He opened the season with a two-hit shutout victory against Class 4A Indianola with nine strikeouts.

Offensively, Hulett batted .238 with 10 RBI.

1A selections

The Class 1A Southwest District includes senior pitcher Caleb Lange and senior outfielder Dusten Reed, both of Lenox.

Lange had 12 starts as a senior, finishing 9-2 with a 1.53 ERA. In 82 1/3 innings he allowed 56 hits, walked 53 and struck out 95. Opponents batted only .152 against him.

In his final game, wrapping up a 16-inning week, he went six innings against state qualifier Martensdale-St. Marys, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in a 2-0 defeat.

Lange also had a productive offensive season after struggling below a .250 batting average in the opening weeks. He finished with a .325 batting average, one home run, 23 RBI and only seven strikeouts in 77 at bats. He scored 24 runs and was walked 20 times, including an intentional pass in the district final game against the Blue Devils.

Reed batted .355 for the 17-9 Tigers with 27 runs scored, five doubles, 15 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He had a team-high .495 on base percentage.

Also, Southeast Polk assistant Dave Hartman of Creston has been named as head coach for the Large Schools West team in the IHSBCA All-Star Series to be held Aug. 6-9 at Ashford University Field, home of the Seattle Mariners Class A affiliate, the Clinton LumberKings.
