TOPS 1338

TOPS 1338, Creston met July 13 with 10 members weighing in. Carol Sheldahl was best loser and Marisue Lewis was the second best loser.

The minutes from July 6 were give and approved. Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

Election of officers was held and Anna Thompson continues as leader, Lewis, co-leader, Alice Brown, treasurer, Diana Loomis, secretary and Neoma Davis and Sheldahl, weight recorder and assistant weight recorder.

Sheldahl won squares and the fines from the previous week went to the treasury. The red can challenge was to increase water intake and decrease juice, coffee and soft drink consumption.

Beverly Lyon was the best loser July 20 and Sheldahl and Shellie Sullivan tied for second. The fines from July 13 went to Sheldahl.

The red can challenge was to plan a menu and prepare it for two days.

Sullivan shared cartoons related to weight loss. She also presented information on 11 “diet” foods that can contribute to weight gain - cereals, diet drinks and juices and “organic” processed foods.

TOPS 1338 will meet again on July 27 at the United Methodist Church, Creston. Weigh-in starts at 5 p.m. with meeting at 5:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome.

VFW POST 1797

VFW Post 1797 met July 14 at the Elks in Creston. Twenty three members and guests were present for dinner.

At 7 p.m. Commander O’Daniels called the meeting to order with 20 members present.

The post draped the charter for comrades Robert Rectenbaugh, Robert Fitch, Donald Hansen, Keith Bailey, Bill Straus and Harold Schuler.

Minutes and QM reports were read and approved.

Service officers report community service 10 hours, hospital 42 hours, Christmas basket one hour, Honor Guard six hours, bloodmobile 25 hours, parade 29 hours and cemetery five hours for a total of 118 hours. They also traveled 550 miles for veterans.

In old business: Thanks to all who rode in the 4th of July Parade. Dennis Abel gave a report on state VFW meeting held in June. Abel was appointed to the office of State Chief of Staff for 2015-16 and also as state membership chairman and O’Daniels was appointed Patriot Pen chairman.

A donation of $60 was made to the chamber for flag rings.

In new business, state commander Travis Holden and Junior Vice Jake Gruber were in attendance and installed new officers. A statement by both Afton and Creston members merged the two posts as one and will still remain Creston VFW Post 1797.

The DOT released a new design for license plates for anyone wanting a VFW plate for their vehicle. Check with Tom Hawks at the VA office if interested. A motion was made and approved to donate $100 to the state fair booth.

Denny Abel gave a report on state and district. Creston post received All State for years 2014-15 for 100 percent membership and participating in all VFW programs.

Meeting adjourned at 8 p.m. The next meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Elks with dinner at 6 p.m. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Wednesday.

Canasta winners were Rose Blakesley, first; Marilyn Larimer, second; and Beulah McDonald, third.

Gwen Sandeman won the door prize.

Union County Genealogical Society

The Union County Genealogical Society will be meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Gibson Memorial Library. The program will be Revolutionary War Period Resources and Records. Each member is to bring a resource they have located that will help members locate information about their Revolutionary War ancestor or a record they have located and where it was found. A short business meeting will follow the sharing program.
