Summer Safe Sitter classes scheduled

Safe Sitter classes for girls and boys ages 11 to 13 have been scheduled in Creston. The Greater Regional Medical Center Auxiliary sponsors the class. Classes are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 14 and 15 in the Greater Regional Medical Center Medical Arts Plaza Conference Room.

The registration deadline for the class is July 10. Cost for the two-day session is $25 per student. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Participants must attend both days, and should bring a sack lunch and a beverage both days.

The Safe Sitter program teaches young adolescents how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. To register your son or daughter, or your child’s babysitter, call Patty Marean at 641-782-7426 or Chelsey Daily at 641-782-3588.

The goal of Safe Sitter is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by sitters. Thousands of young adolescents across the country have been trained by Safe Sitter to handle life-threatening emergencies.

All information is medically accurate and is taught by trained Safe Sitter instructors. During the course, students get hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques so they are prepared to act in a crisis.

Safe Sitter participants also receive helpful tips to make them more confident caregivers. They learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and when and how to call for help. They receive information on child development and age-appropriate activities. They also learn about the business aspects of baby and child sitting.

To successfully complete the Safe Sitter program, the students have to pass a rigorous practical and written test to demonstrate they have mastered the key concepts and have the skills necessary to handle an emergency.
