NV Classic

GREENFIELD — Logan-Magnolia topped Van Meter 11-8 here Saturday in the championship game of the Nodaway Valley Softball Classic, while the host Wolverines finished fourth and Murray finished fifth.

The Wolverines cruised 11-0 over Adair-Casey in the opening game of the tournament.

Paige McElfish gave up just five hits and walked two, while striking out four in the win. Offensively, she hit a double and drove in two runs. Josie Clarke also drove in a pair of runs for the Wolverines, while Kadee Eblen had two hits, including a solo home run.

Rachel Hight and Keeley Shantz each drove in one run.

The Wolverines lost 14-0 in the semifinals to Van Meter.

Nodaway Valley managed just three hits in the game, as Clarke finished with two and Hight had one. McElfish was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Clarke and Kate Jensen each pitched one inning of relief.

Nodaway Valley then fell 12-0 in the third-place game against AHSTW.

McElfish was charged with 11 runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jensen gave up one run on one hit in one inning of relief.

Shantz recorded Nodaway Valley’s only hit of the game.

Murray, meanwhile, lost to Class 1A eighth-ranked Logan-Magnolia in the first round, 6-1.

Breianna Klein gave up six runs, only four earned, on nine hits in the game. Brandi Gilbert hit an RBI single for Murray’s only run of the game.

“That was a hard-hitting team that Bre really contained, except in the third inning when they scored three times,” Murray head coach Danny Jensen said.

Murray rebounded in the consolation bracket with a 3-2 win in nine innings over Exira/EHK.

Kayla Wookey pitched the complete game, giving up only five hits, with both runs being unearned. She struck out five and walked one.

Gilbert hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game 1-1. Klein hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Wookey got a strikeout before the Exira/EHK leadoff hitter reached on an error. On a single to right field, Katie Otto relayed to Madison Gonseth, who threw to McKenzie Case at the plate.

“There was a big hit and Case hangs on to the ball for the second out of the inning,” Jensen said. “Unfortunately for Murray softball and Case, she is hit in her left leg and it is broken. She will be having surgery Wednesday and is out for the season.”

Murray scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI single by Zadie Hatfield to score Gonseth.

The Lady Mustangs put on a hitting display in the fifth-place game against Tri-Center, rolling to an 11-0 win in five innings.

McKenzie McIntosh finished with three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Gilbert had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI. Wookey had two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Chellsea Jones had three hits with one RBI, while Klein had two hits with an RBI. Gonseth had one hit with an RBI.

“All in all, with the exception of losing McKenzie, we had a valuable day of learning and playing against good competition, and against people we do not see during the regular season,” Jensen said. “This is going to help us down the road.”

Wayne 4, Lenox 2

LENOX — Class 1A 12th-ranked Wayne scored in the fifth and sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie on its way to winning 4-2 here Friday against Lenox.

Wayne scored a single run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, before Lenox plated two in the fourth inning.

Aurora Arevalo hit an RBI double and Shantelle Brown drove in Arevalo.

“We hung tough with the 12th-rated Falcons, but couldn’t get the big hit or crucial out when it counted,” Lenox head coach Tom Shields said.

Beth Christensen took the loss in the circle after entering in the fourth inning in relief. Christensen struck out four and walked two. Katie Dukes started and struck out three with no walks.

Lenox dropped to 11-11 overall and 6-6 in the Pride of Iowa Conference with the loss.

Nodaway Valley 2, East Union 0

AFTON — Sophomore Paige McElfish pitched a three-hitter here Thursday as Nodaway Valley beat East Union 2-0 in Pride of Iowa Conference play.

McElfish struck out 13 and issued just one walk in the win. Kadee Eblen doubled and drove in both Nodaway Valley runs.

For East Union, Danielle Riley doubled, while Emily Eckels and Olivia Eckels each finished with a hit. Riley struck out nine and walked one in the loss.
