Boys pairings

Pairings have been set for the boys tennis team substate round involving the Creston/Orient-Macksburg Panthers, now that all preliminary substate matches have been played.

In Atlantic Monday, in a meet postponed by weather on Saturday, Atlantic advanced with a 5-4 victory over Carroll Kuemper Catholic. Meanwhile, Creston/O-M advanced Saturday with a 5-3 victory at home over Council Bluffs St. Albert.

Denison-Schleswig and Glenwood earned byes from preliminary substate play by winning their singles and doubles district tournaments.

At 9 a.m. Saturday in Carroll, Creston/O-M faces Denison-Schleswig and Atlantic meets Glenwood. The winners play for the substate title at about 1 p.m.

Also Saturday, Creston/O-M girls face Ballard in a regional final dual meet at 9 a.m. in Huxley. The winner plays in Norwalk at 3 p.m. Tuesday in first-round state tournament play against Shenandoah or Red Oak.

National tourney

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — Freshman Carson Whittington of Creston is a member of the Kirkwood Community College golf team playing this week in the national tournament being held at Goose Pond Colony.

The team shot 5-over par 293 on the first day. Whittington shot 3-over 75 and teammate Dan Cutkomp was the team leader with a 72. On Wednesday, the team shot improved with a 284, led by Cutkomp with a 68. Whittington shot 74.

The Eagles are sixth with a total score of 1-over 577. South Mountain (Ariz.) Community College is the leader at 23-under 553.

Cutkomp is tied for ninth individually at 4-under 140. Whittington is tied for 66th among 119 golfers at 5-over 149.

The tournament continues Thursday and Friday.

At the regional tournament won by Kirkwood at Panora, Whittington was runner-up medalist with a 78-73 — 151, one stroke behind Cutkomp.

Track honor

Nodaway Valley boys track coach is receiving the Iowa Track Coaches Association 25-Year Coaching Award.

Burmeister will be presented a plaque near the long jump runway at 12:55 p.m. Saturday after the boys 110-meter high hurdles at the State Track and Field Meet at Drake Stadium.

Football meeting

All Creston/O-M high school football players are to meet at 2:45 p.m. Friday in the high school computer lab.

Camp fees are due at that time as the team will be registered for the the Northwest Missouri State University team football camp.
