Library board selects architect for expansion

Gibson Memorial Library Board voted unanimously Monday evening to contract with FEH Associates of Des Moines for the redesign, renovation and expansion of the current library building in Creston.

FEH was chosen from three architectural firms interviewed for the expansion project. The other two were Invision Architecture and OPN Architects of Des Moines.

Criteria for selection included knowledge of emerging library trends, experience with the renovation of aging buildings, creativity in meeting space requirements, understanding of small community relations and ability to adhere to budget constraints. Board members are pleased that FEH has a process for including the public in the design process.

FEH has managed the design and building/renovation of more than 100 libraries in the past 20 years. They have worked on more than 60 Iowa library projects. Past clients spoke highly of  FEH capabilities, including their ability to listen and understand unique needs of each project.

“Today, we take another step forward. We are still thinking bigger to serve Union county residents better,” said Jeromy Brown, library board member.

Gibson Memorial Library will be expanding both space and services at the current location during this project. The new building will include space for the Creston Arts Council and open meeting rooms for other Creston organizations. This new facility — serving the literary and artistic needs of the community — will be known as Creston Area Library and Cultural Center.

The board also named Sue Teutsch the library’s acting director Monday — this following the departure of former director Marilyn Ralls March 31. The board is currently in the process of advertising to hire a new director.
