Creston Ladies Literary Circle

Creston Ladies Literary Circle met April 4 at the home of Connie Rhine. President Linda Hartsock presided over the business meeting. Roll call was taken and minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Sign up sheet for the May 8 spring luncheon was circulated. This event will be held at the Crestmoor Golf Club with the menu as usual but the time will be at noon. The program will be the group discussion of the All Iowa Reads book “My Name is Mary Sutter” by Robin Olivaira. The book is available at Gibson Memorial Library.

Dottie Dunphy of the Program Committee then introduced Midge Scurlock who reviewed “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown.

A cheesecake was served by the hostess.

Tulips and flowers throughout Rhine’s home reminded all members of the blessing of Easter and spring time in Iowa.

The next meeting of Ladies Literary Circle will be April 17 at the home of Vera Fengler. Judy Gile will be reviewing the book “The Spy Princess” by Shibani Basu.

Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc No. 428 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas met March 10. After Mass, Father Halbur was presented with a chaplain’s pin. Dinner was served by the committee of Carolyn Downing, Cindy Bakerink and Sherry Bradley.

The meeting was opened by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Regent Retta read a prayer: an Irish blessing, “Seeing is Believing.” The minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were read and approved.

Jane Collins, Kathy Tapken and June Huewe volunteered to serve on the financial review committee when CD of A has its spring review with district deputy, Pat Taylor.

Members were reminded of the upcoming state convention in May and of their duties as one of the host courts. Retta received a letter asking members to invite Halbur to the 1 p.m. Thursday and Sunday masses. They’ve also requested items for the goodie bags. A list is to be made of deceased members since the last convention two years ago.

Retta has extra copies for anyone who didn’t get the call tree list. Betty gave the card report. She sent a card to Dora Coen. Thank yous for the cookies were received from Ginny Boden, Helen Sheets and Irene Book. Halbur sent a thank you for the security camera.

CD of A chose April 18 as the weekend for the Lifesaver Project. Sixty percent of the money stays local and 40 percent goes to the state.

Next month’s meeting is a potluck with CCW. The program will be games. Anita Studer won the half and half. The membership prayer was recited to close the meeting. Pat Wagoner made the motion to adjourn. Bakerink seconded.

After the meeting, the annual white elephant auction was held with Wagoner as auctioneer.

DWF Executive Committee

The DWF Executive Committee met 10 a.m. April 2 at the First Christian Church on with seven members present.

Midge Scurlock acted as president due to the illness of Pat Fils. Meeting opened with DWF prayer. Twila gave the secretary’s report with one correction on the date for the Methodist Church guest night. Approved. Treasurer’s report was given with no correction.

Old Business: None

New Business: Disciple Women have been invited to the Arispe church for their brunch served 9:30 a.m. April 16. Anyone interested in going, meet at the parking lot of the church to carpool. Rebecca Circle is in charge of the May breakfast on May 7. Margaret will be collecting for the Anything Sale from May through June.

Committee reports: Midge and Shirley have been doing lots of cleaning in the church. The round oak table from the fellowship hall has been moved to the library.

Florence continues to send lots of cards.

Meeting closed with the DWF benediction.

The next meeting will be 10 a.m. May 14 at the church.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 28 members. President Jane Lowe presided, Jim Morris did the prayer, and Chris Eaton was the finemaster.

The program was Joe Powers, owner of Powers Funeral Home, who presented options for funeral preplanning and average costs. He also spoke of his time in California as a funeral director.
