Dean E. Hoffman, 89, of Meadlowlark Hills, Manhattan, Kan., formerly of rural Chapman, Kan., died March 19, 2015.

A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the United Methodist Church in Chapman. Visitation with the family present will be 1 p.m. until service time Saturday. After the service, everyone is invited for ice cream at the church. Cremation has been chosen, and a private internment of the ashes will be held at a later time. Londeen Funeral Chapel of Chapman is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given in his name to Dickinson County 4-H, the American Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Irish Foundation and sent in care of Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.

Dean E. Hoffman, son of Vera (Poland) and Earl Hoffman, was born April 2, 1925, in the New Basel community.

Dean attended local schools, graduating from Dickinson County Community High School in 1943.

In 1945, Dean enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy.

On May 12, 1946, Dean married Reva Jane Thurlow in Wakefield. The couple farmed in Dickinson, Butler and Clay counties and did custom farming before settling south of Pearl where they based their farming operation for nearly 50 years.

Dean was recognized by the Dickinson County Soil and Water Conservation District for his soil conservation and irrigation practices. Dean served as a 4-H leader, Navarre Farmers Coop director and member of the Dickinson County Sheep Association, Dickinson County Republicans and Farm Bureau. He also served as a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Dean is survived by his wife Reva Jane of Abilene; sons, Dan (Linda) of Edmond, Okla., and Gary of Lebanon, Neb.; daughters, Deanna (Dee) Weeda (friend Monty Starlin) of Creston and Sally (Tim) Stroda of Manhattan, Kan.; grandchildren, Matthew (Jenn) Hoffman of St. Augustine, Fla., Daniel (Jenni) Hoffman of Abilene, Cameron Weeda of Creston, Candace Weeda of Denver, Colo., and Jacob and Wade Stroda of Manhattan; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert Hoffman Sr. of Hope; brother-in-law Stanley Thurlow of Wakefield; numerous nieces, nephews, hired men and his Stolzer House family at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Charles E. Wilson, Leola and Mace Grigg, Orla and Bill Owens and Phyllis and Nick Radice; sister Marjorie Hoffman; sister-in-law Louise Hoffman; brothers-in-law, Rod, Russ, Don and Wayne Thurlow; infant granddaughter Tina Hoffman; and Bob, his farm dog.
