ISU Extension and Outreach Week celebrated March 22-28

Union County Extension is honoring ISU Extension and Outreach Week this week.

During March 22-28, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will celebrate the land-grant mission of putting the university’s research and resources to work throughout the state of Iowa.

“Iowa State University is your life-long partner,” said Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. “Iowa State educates more college-age Iowa students than any other university. ISU Extension and Outreach provides the ‘wrap around’ and educates more Iowans. Last year more than one million people directly benefited from our programs.”

ISU Extension and Outreach extends the university’s resources geographically with offices and staff serving every county. ISU Extension and Outreach educational programs cover the entire lifespan, from Iowa’s youngest to oldest residents.

“4-H is the largest youth organization in the nation and is what a lot of people associate with their extension office, especially in Union County with our current 4-H enrollment nearing 220 fourth through 12th graders,” said Haley Jones, Union County Youth and Outreach coordinator. “However, our extension office offers much more than just the 4-H program, we offer countywide programs including Master Gardeners, Family Storyteller, LIFE, Eco Family Project, summer day camps and more. We are your source and location for pesticide and manure applicator trainings and certification. You can come to our office with questions about crops, gardens, cooking, canning, food safety and everything in between.”

ISU Extension and Outreach is a statewide educational network supported by Iowa State University, local county governments and the United States Department of Agriculture. Every county in Iowa has an elected extension council that decides how to support ISU Extension and Outreach educational programs at the county level.

The Union County office staff includes:

• Haley Jones, County Youth and Outreach coordinator

• Marlene Wyer, Child and Adult Food Care Program

• Linda Hewitt, Child and Adult Food Care Program assistant

• Carol LaFaver, Region 18 director

• Tracy Kelley, office assistant
