Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Feb. 25.

Canasta winners were Joan Chubick, first; Mary Kline, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Feb. 23, at Gibson Memorial Library. Fourteen were present.

Roger Nurnberg gave a presentation on “Tracking Women Ancestors.” A discussion followed with the example of a woman who apparently changed her surname for an unknown reason.

Jane Briley presided at the business meeting. She presented tentative plans for programs for 2015. Nurnberg introduced a cousin who is visiting from Germany. Several old photos of early Platte Township residents were received from the family of Jessie Thompson.

Saundra Leininger, regional representative to the Iowa Genealogical Society, reported on IGS activities. Of special interest is a March 21 open house at the IGS Library in Des Moines, and an open house the same day at the State Historical Library across the street. April 18 is the IGS spring conference.

Elaine Brown gave a five-minute tidbit about a relative who supposedly was of Native American descent, but upon further research was found to be Irish.

The program for the March 23 meeting is on finding Irish origins.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for LIFE met 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 at Holy Spirit Hall. President Meg Crawford opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer. Nine members were in attendance.

Secretary Terry Madison read the minutes from the November meeting. They were approved.

In absence of the treasurer, Crawford gave the treasurer’s report. It was approved.

Velma Riegel sent out 24 baby congratulatory cards. Crawford gave a political report.

Under old business, there was discussion on the memorial service held 2 p.m. Jan. 18 at Calvary Cemetery. There was good turnout.

Under new business, Life Care Clinic will hold a fundraising dinner 7 to 9 p.m. May 15. There will be a speaker, and the event is free. The location is unknown at this time.

The sign on North Cherry Street was blown down by the wind but plans are in the works to replace it and also put up a sign in Stringtown.

Rich Madison made a motion, seconded by Jeremy Rounds, to adjourn the meeting.

Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc No. 428 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas met at 6 p.m. Feb. 10 in the church hall. Following the Rosary, a meal was served by the committee of Pat Wagoner, Barb Thomsen and Barb Thompson.

The business meeting was called to order by Regent Retta Ripperger by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A prayer to Saint Valentine was read by Regent Retta. Two guests were welcomed. The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved. Motion to approve was made by Betty Baker and seconded by Pat Pokorny. The treasurer’s report was given. Motion to approve the report was made by Jean Miller and seconded by Pat Wagoner.

On March 13, Catholic Daughters will be serving breakfast at Bunn. Menu and pricing were discussed. Plans will be finalized at the next meeting,

Ripperger gave an update on plans for the state convention. She also filled out the Circle of Love report and submitted it. There were no entries in the education contest. Invitations to join were sent to possible new members.

Betty Baker gave the card report. Cards were sent to Ginny Boden, Helen Sheets, Ann Moore, Dora Coen and Teresa Weis.

A sign-up sheet was passed around for the Lenten soup suppers.

Sharon Skarda won the half and half.

The program was cookie plate preparation for shut-ins.

Members recited the membership prayer to close. Jean Miller made the motion to adjourn, Sharon Skarda seconded. Meeting adjourned.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 24 members and two guests. President Jane Lowe presided, Chris Frederickson did the prayer, and Ed Ritter was the finemaster.

The program was Dennis LaMasters and Curtis LaMasters with BuiltNetworks. They discussed internet security, pass phases and wireless internet usage.

The Kiwanis Pancake Day is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Methodist Church, 400 N. Elm St. Tickets purchased before are $6 and at the door are $7. Children younger than 12, $3. Members have tickets for sale now.
