Chapter LG P.E.O.

Chapter LG P.E.O. met Dec. 2 at the home of Kay Ritter with Karla Powers serving as co-hostess. Fourteen members responded to roll call.

A letter from our Iowa State Chapter President Liz Bunnell encourages us to take time to know our sisters and especially, to enjoy each other. Her theme is “Nurturing Renaissance Women.” She shared a quotation attributed to Kofi Annan, “There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.”

LG will use the money from its auction last month to make a difference in women’s lives by sending a $100 donation to each of the six International P.E.O. philanthropies that include Cottey College, P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund, P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship, P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education, P.E.O. Scholar Awards and P.E.O. Star Scholarship. LG will also send $100 to both the Iowa P.E.O. Project Fund and the Iowa Star Scholarship Fund; and donate $50 to the Creston community food basket for Christmas.

Powers gave the program on the significance, history and symbolism of many of the various Christmas traditions shared in our country.

The birthday luncheon was held noon Dec. 9 at Adams Street Espresso.

The next regular meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 20 at the home of Amy Stults.

Delta Kappa Gamma

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met at 7 p.m. Monday at the home of Karen Tussey with six members present.

During the business meeting, minutes were read and approved, and the financial report was given. The motion was made and approved to offer the $200 Grant-in-Aid this year. There is $90 in the treasury, which is earmarked for this scholarship. Any member who wishes to contribute to this fund should send the money to Deb Bauer. Any shortfall will be covered by money from the general treasury.

Correspondence was read from State President Mary Zirkelbauch thanking the chapter for the Area 6 president’s meeting. A Winterset teacher also sent a thank you for the teacher she received. A card was signed by members to be sent to Jean Miller. Christmas cards were also signed to be sent to the four World Fellowship recipients.

Members discussed details of the state convention. Connie Nielsen contributed mini table runners to be used at Saturday evening’s meal. Needs for the hospitality room and door prizes were reviewed. The planning committee will meet again in January.

The next meeting will be 6:15 p.m. April 7 at the Sports Page in Winterset.

Ladies Literary Circle

Creston Ladies Literary Circle met at the decorated home of Sherry McKie with 21 members present.

President Linda Hartsock presided. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Midge Scurlock, which she had creatively written in verse.

The treasurer’s report was given by Dyan Huffman. Money was collected for the community Christmas Basket.

Ann Driskell of the Program Committee introduced Marilyn Engelson and McKie who entertained the group performing piano duets of special Christmas music and classic favorites of the season. Judy Woods narrated some history of the popular songs and also did a short “Merry Christmas” reading.

Refreshments were served from a decorated table.

Judy Woods will host the next meeting of Ladies Literary Circle Jan. 9. “Killing Patton” by Bill O’Reilly will be reviewed by Linda Hartsock.

Iowa TOPS 1338

Iowa TOPS 1338 met Nov. 25 at the Methodist Church in Creston at 5 p.m. for weigh-in. Anna Thompson called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. with nine members present. Best loser for the week was a tie between Shellie Sullivan and Diana Loomis. Mitzi Cellen was November’s best loser with Carol Sheldahl second.

Minutes were read and approved. Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

Shellie Sullivan presented the program, “Six tips for feeling better about yourself.” Thompson will have the program Dec. 1.

Loomis won Squares.

It was declared a no gain week.

On Dec. 1, leader Anna Thompson called the meeting of Iowa TOPS 1338 to order. Nine members had weighed in at 5 p.m.

Mitzi Cellan was the week’s best loser. There was a tie fro second between Alice Brown, Anna Thompson and Beverly Lyon.

The minutes were read and the treasurer’s report. Squares went to Beverly Lyon.

Thompson gave the program. She related what “overrated restaurant items” have hidden calories and fats. The second part of the program was “10 ways to eat more veggies.”

Monica B. had the program Monday.

Anybody interested in TOPS – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – are welcome to come to the Methodist Church in Creston at 5 p.m. on Mondays to visit during weigh-in and the meeting.

DWF Executive Committee

The DWF Executive Committee met 10 a.m. Dec. 4 at the First Christian Church with nine members present.

Pat Fils, president, opened the meeting with a prayer. Twila gave the secretary’s report. No corrections. Margaret gave the treasurer’s report. She asked for approval of the gifts to the church staff. Approved. Rhonda made a motion to given a gift to the Christmas Basket. Pam second. Approved. Donation to the crisis for abused women was tabled until the next meeting.

Old business: Rhonda brought some samples of the gift bags for the children after their Christmas program. Midge made a motion to pay Rhonda for the gift bags. Second by Pam. Approved. Midge gave an update on the search for a minister. Things seem to be moving along. May be an interim for 3 months at a time and able to be in the office three days a week.

New business: Activities for the scholarship fund. Pie auction on Jan. 18. Rhonda made a motion to put this in the church newsletter, second by Averil. Approved. Suggestion to use the memorial money from the Virginia Lewis memorial to the scholarship fund. Shirley will check with Rhonda Giles. Rebecca Circle will be serving cookies, hot chocolate and coffee Sunday. This is after the children’s Christmas program.

Committee reports: Two funeral dinners were served. Rick Provost and Virginia Lewis services. Florence continues to send out cards.

There will not be a meeting in January. The next meeting will be February 5 at the church.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 25 members and one guest. President Jane Lowe presided. Korina Loudon did the prayer, and Sam Beaty was the finemaster.

The program was Jim McKnight of Afton with the Iowa Farm Bureau Board, who discussed his trip to China earlier this year. The group is working with the Chinese on learning more about their farm imports and how the Chinese system works to improve and expand Iowa’s imports to China.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Dec. 10.

Canasta winners were Beulah McDonald, first; Joan Chubick, second; and Gwen Sandeman, third.

Chubick won the door prize.

Barb Bills will be hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.
