Elzevir Reading Circle

Elzevir Reading Circle met 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the home of Carol Brentnall. Guest speaker was Judy Kading who spoke of her three week experiences in Laredo, Texas, as a volunteer helping refugees and immigrants from El Salvador and Honduras. Many Mothers and their children had fled for reasons of safety and survival risking their lives for a chance to hope, eat and grow up in a free society. Information was handed out about Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors, a United Methodist Immigration Ministry. She recommended reading the book “Enrique’s’ Journey” by Simia Nazario.

President Terry Ammon opened the meeting with a quote from Mark Twain “A man who does read is not better off than a man who can read and doesn’t.” Members answered roll call by telling what they are thankful for or a book they are reading.

The secretary read minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer’s report was given. All members have paid their yearly dues. GFWC and state dues have been paid.

There was no correspondence or unfinished business. Under new business there was discussion on money the club should donate this year. Barbara Thomsen moved to send $25 to the Christmas Basket fund and $25 to the Friends of the Library. Linda Topliff seconded and motion carried. More discussion will follow concerning other funds to be distributed later.

Jean Paul moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Alice Bowers. Motion carried. Members recited Mary Stewart’s Club Collect.

The hostess served a pumpkin dessert from a fall-decorated table.

The next meeting will be 12:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at St. Johns Church. Members are to bring a salad, a book for Christmas exchange, and canned food to be donated. Mary Burg will be the hostess.

Mary Circle

Mary Circle at First Christian Church met Nov. 20 at the church. Averil Lynam was hostess.

There were 12 members present. President Fils opened the meeting with the Disciple Women’s prayer.

Joyce read the minutes from the last meeting.

Margaret gave the treasurer’s report.

There was no old business.

Under new business, Averil and Pat will do bulletin delivery the last two weeks of November.

The next meeting will be Dec. 18 at Margaret Wilkins home.

Florence Willets had the lesson on “Can I really trust the Bible?” There was a discussion afterwards.

Creston UMW

The Executive Committee of Creston United Methodist Women met 9 a.m. Nov. 6 in fellowship hall. Susan Weight, co-president, called the meeting to order, and there were eight in attendance. Beth Perry led the devotions reading scripture from Psalms 145:10-21. She also read from the “Response” magazine about people in the Philippines living in the mausoleums in cemeteries. The Philippine UMW women are trying to help these people. Parry then closed with a prayer from the “Response” magazine titled “Pray.”

There was no communications or correspondence. Minutes and treasurer’s report from the October meeting were reviewed and accepted.

Vice President Ann Driskell reported that the yearbook for 2015 is partly done. There are a couple of offices yet to be filled.

For social action, there is an issue study titled “Church & People with Disabilities.” All people are members of the family of God regardless of their disabilities. For membership there are some new members and some potential members at this time.

Historian Perry reported the history books end with 2012. She has some items from 2013, but needs more information to continue with the book.

During old and new business members discussed the October dinner, and there is a possibility of UMW hosting a mission study on Latin America 2015-16 a geographic study.
The meeting closed with the reciting of the November Bible Verse from Ecclesiastes 4:9-10.

Morning Circle met at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 20 in fellowship hall. Alma Hoepker was hostess, and Susan Weight presided, and there were 14 members present. Perry led the devotions and also gave the program on the “World Thank Offering.”

Evening Circle met at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in fellowship hall. Jane Briley presided with seven members and a prospective member, Connie Maxen, present. Bobi Woodin presented a “Response” moment titled “Loving the Neighborhood of Camden” from the “Response” magazine. Judy Weese gave the program on the “World Thank Offering.”

The next executive meeting will be 1 p.m. Dec. 4 with the unit meeting to follow at 2 p.m. The program for the unit meeting will be Christmas music. Morning Circle is hostess. The next circle meetings will be Dec. 18.

Crest Area Theatre

The monthly meeting of the Crest Area Theatre Board was held Nov. 3. Rehearsals are in full swing for CAT’s upcoming production of “The Regifters,” a Christmas story with a twist. Performances will be 7 p.m. Dec. 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. Dec. 7 at the SWCC Performing Arts Center. As a Christmas gift to the public, all tickets will be $5.

Crest Area Theatre seeks to provide an opportunity for creative activity and entertainment in the theatre and to serve the community by combining the talents of local artists for dramatic, cultural and artistic developments. Kent Dinner Club

Kent Dinner Club will meet 5:30 p.m. Dec. 11. The date published last week was incorrect.

TOPS 1338

On Nov. 3, 10 members of Iowa TOPS 1338 answered roll call after the meeting was called to order by Leader Anna Thompson. Best loser for the week was Carol Sheldahl, and the runner-up was Mitzi Cellan. The club recorded a net loss of six and a-half pounds.

The minutes were read by Diana Loomis and approved. No treasurer’s report was available.

The program was given by Loomis, concerning the continued emphasis on eating five to seven vegetables and fruits daily, journaling, exercise, hydration and cooking healthy lifestyle.

TOPS 1338 meets every Monday evening at 5 p.m. for weigh-in and a 5:30 p.m. meeting at the Methodist Church in Creston. Any woman or man is welcome to visit and or join.

On Nov. 17, TOPS 1338 met and was called to order by A. Thompson. Nine members weighed in. Best loser for the week was Thompson and second was Marisue Lewis. The net loss for the week was 5.5 pounds.

Alice Brown gave the treasurer’s report.

Monica B. won squares.

Carol Sheldahl gave the program on seven brain power foods one should eat daily.

Shellie Sullivan gave the program Nov. 24.

Rebecca Circle

Rebecca Circle met 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at the home of Midge Scurlock. Six members were in attendance.

Pam Richie opened the business meeting with the DWF prayer. Twila gave the secretary’s report. Sue gave the treasurer’s report. Everyone is to pay $10 for their study book and the DWF will pay the rest.

Midge gave a report on the progress of the search committee. They are working hard but taking their time to find the right person for the position of minister.

Pam said circle will need to find someone to deliver the bulletins to the shut-ins the last Monday in December and the month of February. Sue, June and Midge volunteered to take care of this.

New study books, “Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible,” were given out. Midge gave a summary on the old book, “Really Bad Girls of the Bible.”

The next circle meeting will be 6 p.m. Dec. 18 at A&G Restaurant.

The meeting adjourned with DWF benediction.
