Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Oct. 29.

Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Barb Bills, second; and Max May, third.

Joan won the door prize.

Bills was hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday.

Canasta winners were Maxine May, first; Wanda Nash, second; and Rose Blakesley, third.

Beulah McDonald won the door prize.

Connie Bailey will be hostess for cards and chatter Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Catholic Daughters

Court Joan of Arc #428 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas met at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at Holy Spirit hall. A Rosary was prayed, instead of having Mass. A meal of soups and dessert was served by the committee of Betty Baker, Jane Collins and Ann Marie Kinsella.

Regent Retta Ripperger read an article on the history of the Rosary.

Guest speaker was Ken Bresnan from Catholic Charities. He spoke on their work with immigrants and refugees.

The business meeting opened with prayer. Minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer’s report were read and approved. Ripperger gave a report on the workshop she attended in Jefferson. They received information on living wills and heard several pro-life speakers.

Ripperger, Teresa Weis, Betty Baker and Carol McKee met at First National Bank to update signatures on accounts and check the contents of the safe deposit box. Discussion was held on what to do with money received from the CD. Pat Wagner made the motion to table the discussion until there is more information. Pat Pokorny seconded. Motion carried.

Ripperger reported on attending Guest Day at the Platte Center Church. She also attended the CD of A workshop. They were given amendments to the by-laws. It was recommended that each court have a “Tools of the Trade” book.

The Bunn bake sale will be Nov. 21. Baker will confirm the time and buildings before the next meeting.

This court is one of the hosts of the state convention to be held May 14-17 in Des Moines. The theme is “To Jesus through Mary.” They are asking for eight people from each court to help. Members are also expected to donate 10 door prizes.

Baker has agreed to be card chairman.

The state has stressed that each court have a financial review with the district deputy present. The recording secretary, financial secretary and treasurer should also be present and bring their books. This was to be done by Nov. 1. Members are also supposed to have an annual budget. Baker, Jean Miller and Jane Collins agreed to be on the audit committee.

There are three new members: Susan Kosman, Janet Brown and Katie Brennan.

Next month’s program will be by the “Old Market.” She will present Christmas gift ideas.

The meeting closed with the CD of A membership prayer. Miller made the motion to adjourn. Baker seconded. Meeting adjourned.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for Life met 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at the Holy Spirit hall for its annual meeting. President Betty Baker opened up the meeting with the right to life prayer. Twenty members were in attendance.

Terry Madison gave the secretary’s report from September and the annual report. They were both approved.

Pat Pokorny gave the treasurer’s reports for the month and the annual meeting. They were both approved.

Velma Riegel sent out 17 baby congratulatory cards for the month and 133 for the year.

Under old business, Meg Crawford was thanked for writing up the newsletter.

Under new business, the LC clinic in Stuart will be having training for volunteers in November in Creston.

The nominating committee of Baker and Velma Riegel presented the following slate of officers for 2015: President Meg Crawford, Vice President Jeremy Rounds, Secretary Terry
Madison and Treasurer June Huewe.

Phyllis Allen made a motion, seconded by Rich Madison, to accept the slate of officers. It was approved.

Crest Area for Life’s next meeting will be 7:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Holy Spirit hall.

Ruth Fennessey presented the program on the LC Clinic in Stuart.

Union County Genealogical Society

Union County Genealogical Society met Oct. 27 at Gibson Memorial Library. Jane Briley presided. Nine members answered roll call by telling which Midwestern states their ancestors lived in.

Briley showed files she has started containing miscellaneous information about Union County residents mentioned in answering queries. She asked members to add to this file resource.

Dues were paid to continue society membership in the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries.

Saundra Leininger reviewed highlights of the Iowa Genealogical Society fall conference, offering several research tips.

Discussion focused on continuing work on a cemetery transcription project. Kathy Parmenter offered details on establishing a society website as a part of this project. She will report further at the November meeting. Parmenter also reported on the favorable evaluation of the UCGS section on Genweb.

Nomination committee reported, and final vote will be taken next month.

Roger Nurnberg gave the program on Kansas genealogical research. He shared his experiences in researching in person on site, and recommended this as the most satisfying method. He likened Kansas resources to those in Iowa, but with vital statistic records starting much later.

The Nov. 24 meeting will be at the library at 6 p.m. General discussion will focus on “genealogical roadblocks.”

Creston Lions Club

Creston Lions Club met 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Pizza Ranch. President Ron Dunphy called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Delmer Brown gave the invocation.

After the meal, Dunphy conducted the business meeting. The secretary’s report was approved. Communications were shared and announcements were made including a reminder that the District 9 SW Convention will be held Nov. 7-8 in Panora. Members of Lions International will observe the 100th year of organization in 2017.

A request for financial assistance in acquiring hearing aids for an individual was presented by Beth Perry on behalf of the Sight and Hearing Committee. After information was presented and discussion held, the club approved the project. The person with the request will receive help with the cost of ear molds. Arrangements will be made with the Iowa Lions Hearing Aid Bank and ASI Audiology of Creston.

Jerry Thomsen asked for cooperation in preparing a float for the Lighted Christmas Parade to be held Dec. 4. Discussion followed. Charles Chester reported plans have been started for the club’s annual Spud Supper scheduled for Feb. 26 to be held at Creston United Methodist Church.

Dunphy gave the program, which was a power point presentation about a trip he and his wife Dottie made this fall to Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Chester won the drawing.

The next monthly meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 at The Pizza Ranch. Guests and prospective members are welcome to attend.

Kiwanis

The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at The Windrow with 27 members and one guest. President Jane Lowe presided. Ken Norton did the prayer, and Jacki Steffen was the finemaster.

The program was Lori Harvey and Kristen Ambrose with Creston Nursing and Rehab. They discussed the new addition on their nursing home on Cottonwood, and the expansion of therapy services and additional private rooms they will now be able to offer to their short- and long-term clients.

The selling period for the fresh Christmas wreath fundraiser is now closed, and the fresh wreaths will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving.
