SWCC opens at home tonight after 3-0 loss at Indian Hills

OTTUMWA — It was more rugged competition for the Southwestern volleyball team Tuesday night, with a 3-0 loss at Division I unbeaten Indian Hills.

The Warriors improved to 6-0 with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 victory over the young Spartan squad, which fell to 1-4 for the year.

“They have tall hitters and blockers in the front row,” said SWCC coach Ting Liu. “They are Division I with 16 on their roster, and they are very good players.”

The freshman-dominated Spartan team was led by the all-around play of Carmen Subbert of Stanton, who had a team-high five kills and nine defensive digs. Madison Walston of Bedford added four kills.

Bailey Preston, freshman setter from Omaha, finished with 15 assists for kills. Mikayla Prott, 6-foot freshman middle hitter, finished with three assisted blocks.

The Spartans’ home opener is tonight at 6:30 against conference rival DMACC, which is off to a 3-1 start this season. A fans tailgate, with pulled pork sandwiches served, will be held in the Student Center from 5 p.m. until match time.

DMACC is ranked ninth on the preseason Division II poll.
