Southwest Iowa Shutterbugs

Southwest Iowa Shutterbugs Camera Club held its regular meeting Aug. 8 at the Creston Pizza Ranch. There were 21 members present, answering “What is your photography goal for the 2014-15 season?”

The secretary’s report was approved, and the treasurer’s report wasn’t given as the treasurer wasn’t present.

Winners of the state and county fair photography competitions were recognized. Members who entered state fair were: Kathy Hribal, Kim Scharfenkamp, Pricilla England, Jenny Bolinger, Debbie Bates, Kathy Rohrig, Sandy McCurdy, Ann Hegstrom, Brenda Strauss, Michelle Jones, Vera and Walter Fengler, Leon Maxson, Linda Freeman, Sheila Sutton and Rod Tostensen. Eight of those members displayed with Brenda Strauss winning a second place.

Kathy Hribal was top winner at the Union County Fair, and Sandy McCurdy and Shelly Reed won “Best of Show” at the Adair County Fair. Discussion was held about Union County Fair. Union County would like some recommendations for judges for the photography for next year. Also, if we would like to see some category changes, let them know.

President Deb Loudon reminded everyone that Southwest Iowa Shutterbugs Camera Club’s new year begins in September with new officers: Deb Loudon, president; Deb Bates, vice president; Annette Pingree, treasurer; Kim Walter, secretary; Sheila Sutton, membership; Vera and Walter Fengler, historian; Kathy Rohrig, N4C Print chairman; and Deb Jensen, N4C digital chairman. Jensen reported because of medical issues, she will be unable to be the N4C digital chairman, and Brenda Strauss was elected to take over her position with Sheila Sutton helping her.

Discussion was held about the club’s meeting place; should it be the United Methodist Church or Pizza Ranch, both of Creston? Several like the camaraderie of The Pizza Ranch, others like the space and professionalism of the Church. It was decided to discuss with Tim Abramowitz (since he has been a mentor), which he feels would be better before a final decision is made. At this time, the first meeting of the month on the first Thursday will be at the church, and second meeting at The Pizza Ranch unless a another location is planned for hands-on, usually held on the third Thursday of the month.

Discussion was held about N4C competitions which start in September. In order for more to feel more comfortable about entering, a hands-on meeting Aug.21 will be at The Pizza Ranch, about how to get photos ready and enter the digital competition.

Deb Loudon handed out assignments from Abramowitz. He will not be here this month, but wanted everyone to work on these. Sharing time is back; bring photos to share or if you would like them critiqued. Some photo sharing was done by members.

The next meeting will be 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21, social and photo sharing time. The hands-on will begin at 6:45 p.m. with Deb Bates. Bring photos, digital and print, you would like help with to enter the N4C competitions. N4C print entries for September will be due Sept. 4 at the meeting; the digital entries will be due Sept. 10.
